Several years back I bought a Thumler’s Model T Tumbler kit at a garage sale. I think I paid $5 dollars for it, maybe less. I looked like it had been used once, some of the course grit was gone, but everything else in the kit was intact. There was a receipt with kit dated 11/26/94 - $79 from the Nature Company. I’m willing to bet it was Christmas gift that wasn’t ultimately appreciated. The tumbler sat on a shelf in my basement for a long time. It looked interesting, but I didn’t get around to setting it up for all of that time.
Recently, took it off the shelf and plugged it in. It ran perfectly, but the belt fell apart ion my hand. I ordered some replacement belts and at the same time ordered some rough Crazy Lace Agates to tumble.
I went through the four step tumbling process with the Crazy Lace and today I started my burnishing run. I am hooked now and I ordered and received some tiger eye agate and Mookaite for my next run.
I have a couple of questions. When I ran the crazy lace the original rocks were very rough with sharp edges. When I completed my week of tumbling with the course grit I wasn’t entirely pleased with the results as the rocks still didn’t have real rounded appearances, so I left them in for another week. After two weeks tumbling with the same course grit, the rocks were okay, but I still wasn’t 100% pleased. I went on to do the fine grit tumbling run, etc. and the rocks look good, but I still would like them more rounded. The tiger eyes and Mookaites that I plan to use for my next series of tumbling runs is equally rough and sharp and I am planning on tumbling them with the course grit for at least 3 week, maybe more. Is this advisable? If I proceed on this path, should I change out the the course grit every week?
