Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the overwhelming number of lookey lous that never join. I see these type number alot ( 141 Members, 2,910 Guests.) and just wondered why. I know we have gotten a good number of joins lately but not that many. Curious minds have to know

I think that's been questioned before. If I remember right, it was mentioned the likelihood of "bots" on the forum, hounding for information...

It's not too hard to imagine close to that many hits from google searches alone - including image search. In fact, that sounds about right- minus some bots.

Don't know about you but I lurked for a couple of months before joining, frankly have never been a member of any other forum. I also really did not want to ask questions that had been addressed many times over the past 15+ years so did a lot of reading of the old threads. A forum certainly needs new members (who will naturally have many beginner questions) to survive but if I had one recommendation to any new member it would be to dig into the wealth of information that is already here.

Lots of factors. Some just looking for info and don't want to join just to ask a question or 2 (that was me at first). Bots mining data, (see what comes up in your Amazon recommended after you research something on here), image searches are a big part as we do have a lot more pictures than most forums. Some vendors (just trying to track trends), and people who may have logged off, but left their browser open. I really don't put too much stock in the numbers as there is no real positive way to tell what is what anymore.

In 2012, I had a rock photography question. Searched the web for answers. Found a forum, had to join in order to ask the question. Received nice, polite answers. It was lovely experience.
Told a friend about my experience. He advised that I join RTH. He had been a member for many years, so I did.
Not being a joiner, I went back to the first forum to quit. I couldn’t figure out how!!! I could handle just one forum.
I suspect that is the case here at RTH. I’m glad I joined. RTHlings good😀

I wonder about all the the Strangers Reading RTH too. Thousands visit Never contribute. 'dule, many people even join, but do not contribute, not a single post. Numerous people show up when the word "free" is mentioned, others to take advantage of member's ultra-reasonable prices for materials. I joined when I wanted to find out what type of rock I won a slab of as a raffle prize, then never left. (It was Imperial Jasper.) On July 31, I will have been here ten years. They just can't seem to get rid of me!

I joined because I had 8-10 digging friends from the Southeast and beyond that recommended RTH to me. Now I rarely if ever see them on the board for mostly unknown reasons. I've made many new friends here that I would not have if it hadn't been for RTH. You're a great group. RickB

Prolly just ghosts. or even more weirder.. 'invisible users' GUILTY as charged. But I do have a good reason. Years back I ran into trouble with another member. The issue left the thread and continued in PMs. I got help with a Mod and things settled down for a bit. Then out of the blue I got targeted again and would get 5 or 6 PM's when I went online. I turned invisible and the problems stopped (evidently they only got there jollies if I was online and they knew they were harassing me). Guess I never felt the need to become visible again lol.

We kept finding answers to questions here in online search results. We weren't coming here looking for info, but kept winding up here anyway.
That happened for a while, then we were invited to the barbeque at Tony's booth in Quartzsite by folks who were already RTH members. Met so many great people there we joined pretty soon after that.
