Hello folks,
I carved a soapstone rock and made a video of the process. I love carving this stone as I don't have to use power tools. It is quiet, making it more enjoyable.
Are there other folks on this forum carving soapstone? I'd love to see pics of your carvings!
Watch to the end and you'll see other soapstone creations I have made.

Nice work. Any concern about the dust?

Very cool looking owl and other creations. I'm impressed with what you can do with only hand tools.
My daughter and I took a soapstone workshop maybe 15+ years ago or so. I chose to carve a seal because of its simplicity. Following the workshop I started carving a tiger at home, but work and life took me away from it. It's at a very crude roughed-out stage. I'll post a photo tomorrow.

That was awesome to watch. Your cat going in and out of the frames made me laugh.
Thanks for sharing!

I managed to find my tiger, farmermac . It doesn't look like much because I stopped working on it after I had done roughing out with rasps. Our instructor would move on to power tools and burs at this point. He had a window with a fan to force out all the dust, but I don't have one and the weather was wet and cold so I just put it away.
In your video it looked like you were using woodcarving tools. If I'm going to finish this cat some day I'll have to buy a cheap set.

I found a pile of soapstone next to an old ruby/sapphire mine years ago in the Appalachian mountains. Yellow/green color. It would pass light when 2 inches thick. So soft. Could be sawn with a carpenter's hand saw. Understandable why you would enjoy carving the stuff.
I wish I knew where I saw the giant pile. I'd make a soap stone wood burner.

Great carving and very nice video to watch. Glad to see you had a helper / supervisor stop in every now and then. (=•́ܫ•̀=)

Thanks everyone. Glad you enjoyed. parfive - the dust isn't that big a deal with chisels the sand paper and files can kick up the dust. I just try to move slowly and empty the carving often into a bucket, work outside if I can. opalpyrexia - yes, regular chisels work quite well. Your carving is looking good, nice large piece. jamesp - thanks for the compliment. finding soapstone in the rough is really nice. I can buy it for 1$/lb but can add up if you are getting a truck load. A wood burner made out of soapstone is a dream of mine. maybe one day.....
