I was wondering how long you guys cab at a time. I generally don't cab unless I can start early and work until about 3 (when DH typically gets home). I have to move Gene and set up. It isn't worth it to me to set up just for a few hours, so I generally start around 9.

Less than a half hour. My Genie is set up permanently outside. My age limits how long I can work without a body part complaining. I take frequent breaks and work a few hours a day. I lose focus (pay less attention to detail and less patient) when fatigued.

When I'm in the mood- HOURS. Seriously I can can for 8 or 9 hours straight when I'm in the mood. Usually I go about 2 hours on an average session. When things are not going well I can't even stand to cab for 15 minutes! Thankfully I have a permanent set up in the basement complete with a heater!

Lately I've been cutting 1 cab a week. Trim saw, dop and cut...less than an hour. But what I really enjoy is studying the slabs and doing layout. If I had to guess I'd say I spend at least an hour a day just looking at rocks.

If I had to guess I'd say I spend at least an hour a day just looking at rocks. I divide my rock time between layout on one day, cutting preforms on another and then cabbing. I enjoy the layouts, too. I wish I had more time to do all of them, but I work on the kitchen/hobby table and always have a houseful of family.

I can go for hours when I'm in the zone, but when they start coming off the stick or I run into a lot of fractures or whatever other irritating thing happens too much, I have to put things away.

Tops, probably six hours. An old shoulder injury dictates the terms 😂

I am impatient and like to work fast. I try to do most of my work with an aggressive 80 grit wheel and like to watch a preform melt away. I don't try to be ultra precise, but the more rock I grind the better I get. 30% of my sales are to silversmiths and they like lower prices and can work around my imperfection. I'm retired, locked down and enjoy grinding rock. If I try to do too much at one time, I need to take some time off for my body to recover.

This right here for me. I've gone for 8-9 hours (like stefan ), but when I feel myself starting to get irritated, it's time to stop.

I usually work with batches of material for 2-3 hours in both the morning and afternoon. Most of my material is hard and I rough cut on a 60 grit flat lap and then refine the shape on a less coarse lap. The cabs are then finished in the UV-18 vibe once I have a sufficient quantity.

i find my best work is one cab, start to finish. trim saw/cut/polish/ i wanna say? 90 minutes.
i have saws running all the time ...so interruptions are imminent.
i also sit down while i cab..i have an adjustable barstool type seat that lets me get to the right angle

But my back is so shot that I have to watch how I move. I preform at my really small Ameritool sitting down.

I do mine in batches as well. Last fall I finished sawing out 750 preforms. I had to enlist my wife for help as to her opinions for what to cut so we worked at nights after work marking out cabs. ( it is easy to get in a rut and only cut a limited shape) I find it freeing to be able to cut all the wire wrap shapes different than in the old days when you had to buy a mount that fit a 25x18, 30x22 or a 40x30. I rough out bunches (right now I have 200+ ). then I dop 15-30 at a time and run them through the coarse side of the Titan 80, 220, 220nova. Then after the batch is all done to 220nova I move to the other side and and start 280, 600 and 1200. Once that is done I move to Beacon star grinder with 3000 and 8000. These days with doctor requirements to drink 80+ oz of water a day I am limited to about 2hrs before my bladder starts shouting but on a good day 4hrs in the morning 3 hrs in the afternoon and 3hrs after dinner. Other days as little as 3hrs. I spent 2.5 hrs Saturday trying to match a customers fake turquoise stone to a stabilized turquoise. You never get that time back and you can't charge enough to really make a profit. the rest of the day we had a customer bring a rock to repolish. I never did get to polishing.
