A friend asked me to tumble this for her. She asked me to keep some of the integrity of the rock, such as the layers. Just to make it more smooth. She asked what it was, but I do not know for sure. She found it in her Central WI yard, but it could have come from landscape rocks. It is about 2.5” wide. Hardness of about 7. Reminds me of black chert with white quartz/chalcedony. The black areas have a waxy appearance. The white layers are interesting. Thank you.

A chert nodule perhaps? We have lots of chert nodules around here, and they usually have an outer layer with "rings" like yours and the color(s) of the chert inside that layer are completely different in color or texture and banded.
