My normal hunting grounds are gravel washed up on the beach after storms in berms. Great how this action often classifies the stones in sizes and shapes and to some degree types (denser materials like hard quartz will end up in a layer often just below other types). Not so many storms in the New England summers which is a bummer cause the water isn't icey cold and your not standing in a teeth chattering wind.
That said I'm looking to get some sifters and/or make some. I noticed the gold industry has great classifying trays but these are much smaller holes than I'll need. I also like how they stack and seem pretty durable.
Not sure how stainless steel will hold up with the salt water and the plastic rock sifters look a little iffy.
Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated.

There are some made for separating rocks from tumbling slurry. Some have 1/2" spaces.

What volume of rock are you looking to classify, and to what sizes?

I did pickup a couple smaller pan sized sifters from the rock shed (on the way) at 1/2 and 1/4 inch. But I have to say I really like Waynes DIY sifter ideas so I could go through a lot more material at once. 1/8 inch would probably be as small as I'm willing to deal with. I think using the small 1/4 from rockshed will at least give me an idea of whether I want to classify anything smaller. Thanks manofglass

I have multiple from various sources. There are some nice ones made for gardening. Others for gold prospecting. The plastic screens work OK unless you drop a huge rock on it and don't scratch like metal does. Most of my gold classifiers have metal screens, but the rim is plastic and it can break. My best garden sifter came from Lee Valley (Canada) and my best gold classifiers (which stack) were from Keene Engineering in California. I have also used dollar store sifters to good effect. I also have a few of the Garrett 1/4 inch - all plastic and have yet to break one.
