Hey folks, check out this cool petrified wood I just got from my wonderful, awesome brother Nick. He was helping a friend excavate out an area to build a mansion (6000 sq ft home) in the snooty south hills of Eugene Or, when this stuff started popping out of the ground. This was the largest piece that made it out whole. The remainder was broken to bits by the construction machinery, and called a pain in the tush by the construction people. That red is decieving, the opalized part is in layers 3/16 thick, every inch or so along the length of the piece. To cut and polish it and show the true beauty might take a magician, rather than a lapidarist! It's still a really neat piece. Thanks Nick!!

Wow, that is a nice hunk of wood. So did you get any of the broken up stuff that is probably just right to throw into the tumbler? When I see an area that is being bulldozed for housing or roadwork, I try to check out what's coming out of the ground, ya never know.

That looks heavy, are u going to leave whole? thanks for sharing - I found a 5 lb piece of granite and some other stuff this weekend for a building site - everything but shale and sandstone is rare in North Texas.

Man that really looks like a great hunk. Are you gonna try to cut it, or leave it be? The middle really looks like it has some great color.

I haven't made up my mind yet as to what I will do. But then I don't have a saw large enough to cut so for the time being, it will remain whole. And no I didn't get any of the chunks. The constructon crew buried the site with gravel before I could visit it.

Nice find. Now you gotta get your brother a cell phone so he can call you in before they backfill.

Fatrichie, I think I would've gone up there and started digging myself. That's a fantastic piece....it's just around the corner for us up here! What do you say we go and do a little excavating on the site ourselves? Steve
