Today I was asked by an old rockhound if I could cut a rock for a friend of his. Sure , bring it along. A very strange piece appeared and it was quite big, awkwardly shaped. Tried to fit it in the saw and decided to knock some edges off so that I could cut a straight edge first. Wow what nice colours. The bits we knocked off were shaped a bit like flint chips..is that called conchoidal? After that initial cut I managed to get the rock in safe position. Took first an outer cut off and low and behold that is so beautiful. Very colourful jasper !! Then I was allowed to cut a slab for myself which I gladly did ofcourse. For my troubles I got given a very well made sphere which was made of marble from a gravestone. The slab is now 10"X5" and 5/6th of an inch thick. The sphere is 7 cm or 2and 4/5th of an inch diameter. The leftover block the slice the 2 together and with the sphere Thanks for looking Jack

That is beautiful! There's nothing like cutting into a rock and finding a surprise like that is there?

Nice colors! Finding the treasure inside is really fun isn't it? Love the whole treasure hunting aspect of this hobby!

Ooooooh, perteee rock!! Those would make PREMO book-ends! I'm still waiting to find something that nice (and LARGE) around here... I DID find a nice tourmaline deposit that was exposed in a boulder on a rocky beach below a gravel quarry that looked as if it were broken open by an impact with another large boulder and some green serpentine/quartz almost jade looking stuff on the side of another broken boulder nearby... I will try to get around to taking & posting some pics.

Thanks for all your comments. Bill Simmonds is going to polish this big rock by hand. He will use part of the first cut to grind it to a smooth surface. He is an old rockhound buddy of Charlie Powell. They have hunted for rocks together for many many years. I am going to take this rock to him shortly. Here are some pics of the outside of the rock..rather rough. Jack

So I took the big piece back to him in town ...eh city of Invercargill, haha.
He was very pleased with the result. He had some more rocks ready to give to me...offcuts of agate and tiger eye that he turns into a cabochons. And he gave us some nice crystals.one clear quartz and one smokey quartz.
I have asked him if he could let me know when he has it all polished up so that I can take some fotos . I have been grinding at the edges a bit this afternoon and most of it is hard as. Some material was rather brittle and came away easy. The rock came from the North Island of New Zealand, somewhere east of Auckland an area called:" Coromandel".
