I like to collect things. The weirder, eccentric, and unconventional things are especially attractive to me, and when I speak of them my wife sometimes mentions "lunatic rantings."
One of the chief problems in collecting is where to put the collections so that it doesn't junk the place up and it's an ongoing struggle for me to solve this problem.
RTHlings probably collect a few rocks and I'm wondering if any of you have found good solutions to displaying them without using up a lot of space.
Any ideas? Got any photos to share of your collections?

Here's a display case for some coprolites. I don't like that it projects into the room 14 inches. I'm thinking of making new cabinets that are only four inches deep and then I can place them in a basement hallway that doesn't get much traffic.

Randy, what about creating an inset shelf? That way you can have the 4-6" into the wall, and then only come out into the room as far as you want...or have them flush to the wall surface...

I have a couple hallway walls that could be utilized this way. There will be electrical wires to reroute, but that's not too bad.

manofglass mentioned some plexiglass over the surface would help keep out the dust. It could also help to keep kids hands off the delicate stuff.

My display rocks are mostly in three tall lawyer’s cases. Each shelf has a glass window.

I have some deeper cabinets that are appropriate for larger specimens, but the majority of my needs would be served by shallow shelves. Don't tell woodman about these.

Do you have any pictures of your "weird" collections? Some weirder things I own... samples of cloth made from tree bark from the "Sandwich Islands" (Hawaii) circa 1812; a bone fid from a sailing vessel;an ashtray made from melted-down metal from the USS Constitution; a 12-pound brass shot-put; a WW2 medical blanket, and a doctor's bag that may have been used at Andersonville prison pen. Oh, and an antique glass eye, but those are pretty common.

Oh, and an antique glass eye, but those are pretty common. That's so cool! I love stuff like that, especially if it can be arranged together in a display of related items. I have a few collections.... pre-WW1 antique whiskey and medicine bottles, pre-WWII Argentine military firearms, eccentric weathered chert pieces, antique cartridge cases, ventoliths, Wyoming jade slicks, Dan Wesson super mag revolvers, and a modest coprolite collection.

I like the idea of an inset shelf and the wall display case. We put a lot of our thunderers on the deck in a rustic shelf I got off craigslist, but if I ever polish them, I will want to bring them inside. The number of rocks I have is becoming overwhelming and the house looks a lot less cluttered since we packed them all up due to a water leak related reno. I'm hoping more folks will chime in with ideas.

I remember the line in a b-movie "Hey little girl, want to seem my rock collection? I keep it under the stairs in the basement". Consequently, that is the only place in the house that I don't have a few rocks.
One of my favourite displays is an antique printer's box. Wooden with small compartments, hanging on the wall. I put all kinds of small goodies in there. Everything from old coins, thimbles, natural wire silver, gold nugget, etc. For tumbled rock, the best stuff goes into a large box with a glass top that my wife got at a craft store. Some rocks look best with lots of light and those are on window shelves. At the end of the day, any unused flat surface gets a rock or collectable, until somebody moves it. Right now, that somebody is my new pup. She picks up everything. No shoe is safe. Neither are small rock clusters. Yesterday, was a quartz cluster and my wife has since found "diamonds" that broke off. You would think the points would hurt. Definitely, a Labrador rock hound.

Nice! I forgot I also have an ikea bookcase with glass doors on top and panels on bottom. I have rocks displayed On that as well. My problem is I'm also spilling over onto the deck and garage!

So far the best thing I've found for my needs is shallow shelving that doesn't protrude into the room too far. I just got this one and plan to build more so I can phase out the deep ones I've had for years. Here it is as I'm starting to place part of my collection in it. I like the plastic stands, would work good for thundereggs!
