Hells Canyon is located in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Idaho. The Snake River flows northward through it.
Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in the United States. The Snake River is the largest tributary of the Columbia River, which is the largest North American River to empty into the Pacific Ocean.
As for the beautiful Hells Canyon petrified wood, Sam Silverhawk has some info about the story of the petrified wood and its history in his Lapidary blog - samsilverhawk.com/lapidary/2010/12/hells-canyon-petrified-wood/ The story "Hell’s Canyon petrified wood!!" is from December 13, 2020.
He also has many fine examples of his cabochons from this material (and many others!) on his website - www.samsilverhawk.com/2012gemstones/1216cabs/hcpet.html This actually only links to just one of them. Go to his website to see more - samsilverhawk.com/2017gemstones/index.html . Cabs are listed for sale by year made (I guess?) Just wander through to see photos of his varied cabs.
I love that he leaves his photos of already-been-sold cabs on the website. More eye candy. Cover your keyboard, and have a drool rag at the ready!
ETA - looks like they are all sold. But you can still look at them and enjoy them.

I was scrolling down through the pictures and thinking nothing was going to beat the Turkish Thunderegg or the Turkish Agate...then I get to the Hell's Canyon wood slab...WOWSER!!! We have a Hell's Canyon here in the Black Hills...but I doubt it holds anything like this!
