Not exactly stinky, but Dino bone and turitella agate definitely have a distinctive “funny” smell

Oh, and so is Indian Paint Stone - big time. Not exactly stinky, but Dino bone and turitella agate definitely have a distinctive “funny” smell I think they both smell like burning flesh...so does Whale Bone...

I thought that was my thumb when I wasn't dopping.... Yup. I think you nailed it. That smell definitely seems to be there for a lot of shell or bone (organic* calcium: calcite, apatite or aragonite) in agate. *Organic in the chemistry/biology sense: contains carbon/derived from a living thing. Although, if it's old enough to be a fossil, it was probably also free-range.

Did you ever wonder why a dinosaur was the logo of Sinclair Oil?

Sanora dendritic rhyolite is definitely a mess to cut, and I'll offer a strong second for both boulder opal and psilomelane as well. I haven't found too many stones that smell too bad while grinding, although a couple pieces of Biggs I have smell a little like eggs.

Doesn’t really smell like oil to me. The burnt description is closer. Plus oil really comes from “swamp juice” — dead microbes (mainly) and plants (some). It predates dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years, and can even be billions of years old.

Apache Gold is really messy. Thanks for the warning, Robin. I have a couple of slabs waiting, so now I'll be sure to dress appropriately when I get to them.

Coprolite was once messy and stinky, but in it's agate form isn't too bad. Once in a while I'll hit a crumbly pocket that seems a bit untidy.

Not exactly stinky, but Dino bone and turitella agate definitely have a distinctive “funny” smell Oh no, you can definitely call them stinky. Don’t hold back friend. lol Chiapas amber has a smell to it. Fordite will give you a fume headache after a while. Tiger iron is messy, Jaspilite (red stuff from Michigan) will bleed everywhere. Boulder opal is crazy messy both in the trim saw and on wheels. Hematite mess mess. I guess anything stone with hematite in it will be messy. Jet-messy.

Red jasper from start to finish, is messy and bleeds red everywhere! I got use to the smell of dino bone and fossils, while they are being cut or worked on wheels...

I guess "stinky" is in the nose of the beholder. After enough time smelling things that grow in labs, the threshold gets higher, I suppose. DARPA once gave out grants to develop a stink bomb (truly!), but no one was able to find a universally offensive scent. I will confirm that hematite-containing material is messy, as is a lot of red jasper. Crazy lace with red matrix, too, for that matter. I haven't worked with a lot of Fordite, but I've heard that if you get a lot of solvent fumes, then it's not the genuine, "old-stock" material, but, rather, recently "harvested." This younger material is supposedly also softer.
