The user that posted the photo spoke highly of it, but then never said what it was. I do not even have an acronym.

looks like fish tank gravel Now, that was my first thought too due to the multicolor. But, look how sharp the chunks are.

Corundum (sapphire) maybe? That's the only thing I can think of with all those colors and with a hardness of 9, it would work.

Have you tried asking the poster of the photo where to get it?

looks like fish tank gravel Was my first thought too. But then if you look closely the streaks of the board the pile is on makes me think this material is quite small. Way smaller than any fish tank gravel i evee seen. Unless its a huge piece of wood.

Is there some valid reason to want to use a blend of medias in that way? E.g. of varying hardnesses.

lootsmith & lincoln you are correct the wood grain is large and I had not noticed. It still looks like 8 mesh size to me but the image also makes the grains look grainy like sandstone/quartzite not like crushed corundum or garnet. Try a hardness test to see what it will scratch.

Could be some kind of sandblasting abrasives.

Except for the porosity, it does look like aquarium gravel before the rough edges have been knocked down. There are a few cylindrical pieces in the mix that makes me think it is some form of ceramic. Due to the colors, it doesn’t seem like its main purpose is as an abrasive, unless it is the coarse leftovers from the production of colored nail files.

"unless it is the coarse leftovers from the production of colored nail files." You were SO CLOSE!

I’m glad you got a definitive answer from them. The multiple colors were the tip-off for being a manufacturing byproduct.

AO does come in a variety of colors but never knew in that many. Maybe one day they can color code AO 220-500-1000-polish !
