Both of these were purchased online from The Gem Shop. Talk about two completely different examples!!! There are some pitting issues in the darker areas (black and brown), so it'll be interesting finding a good cab location on this. I love that second one IMMENSELY! LOL

Thanks Mike! I cut a couple slabs off each of the rocks and marked out some preforms on the slabs. I was going to cut out the preforms, but it's too dang hot outside right now! LOL - So, maybe tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm a bit excited now to see how the cabs are going to turn out.

Are they pet wood? The top one sure looks woody to me. It really does have a petrified wood look to it, doesn't it!?! The section you're referring to is actually sagenite. (I couldn't remember what it was called, so I had to look it up this morning! LOL) That sagenite area is kind of pity...so I'm not sure how it's going to stand up to being cabbed just yet. I only slabbed about half of each rock...so maybe it gets better further into the rock...

They look quite different from each other as well for being the same material. When you say that you cut a couple slabs off of each rock, does that mean you have more pictures to share?

I'll take some pics of the slabs with the outlines stenciled on them. Then we'll see if they turn out like planned or not.

It does bring joy to my day to see more rock spics!
Just wait long enough between the stencil pics and the cab pics and I'll forget about the stencils. This steel trap is more like a sieve...

That's some great material, Jason. Also, you look better wearing a hat.

Looking forward to seeing the other slabs and how they cut. That second rock looks like it's going to turn out some awesome cabs!

Thanks Jesse! I'm going to post the slab pics here in a minute. That's some great material, Jason. Also, you look better wearing a hat. Thanks Gary! I would totally agree with you on the hat...and my wife likes my new avatar picture WAY better than the old one! LOL Looking forward to seeing the other slabs and how they cut. That second rock looks like it's going to turn out some awesome cabs! Thanks Robin! The first one is hit and miss with what will let me make cabs...but you're right, that second one "should" produce some beauties! the first one looks to be a limb cast way cool Thanks Roy! That first one really has some pretty cool looking characteristics to it! Thanks Stephan! It does have some real similarities to Sheep Creek! I think Sheep Creek might allow more cabs from slabs though!

Here are the pics of the slabs I cut with the shapes I "intend" to cut stenciled on them. In that last slab, the middle oval was the last to be drawn as I wanted all those shapes and patterns around the perimeter for sure. Maybe I should have done a "cab that slab" contest! LOL

Those look like they’ll be awesome! Good luck. I hope the material cooperates and we get to see the results. Especially looking forward to 1, 2 and the 5 o’clock on the last slab.

That bottom oval (at 5:00) didn't cooperate as much as I'd like. It's probably my favorite out of the batch. There was a soft spot on the edge. So, I might have to narrow the oval a tad to get past it. I think this was a 30°, so I might have to go with a 20° oval...god forbid I actually make it a freeform! LOL

Two, actually. You can do it. Remember, half the point of a free form is that they are more oops-proof for difficult material.
