I was fortunate to find this Lortone 8" trim saw yesterday. I know I'm going to need to do rehab at some point but it looks promising. Has some rust and had been run with water coolant. The manual calls for oil. Does anyone else out there have one of these? What do you run? I realize "water or oil?" is the age old question... It squeaks a fair amount and I'm guessing I am going to wind up needing bearings... maybe? It would be fun to trick it out and paint it but not sure I have the time for an overhaul, I just want to start using it sooner than later. I realize there's a pdf for saw care and blades, it's time to revisit that to see what pertains to this new saw. res.cloudinary.com/jr8675309/image/upload/v1623605450/C1BF25F4-750E-4EB4-890B-4C2C13421E2B_i13tio.jpgEdited to correct spelling of Lortone.

Put some oil in it and try it. Just maybe being flexed a bit with oil in the tank it will decide it wants to run quietly. Don't worry about the rust. It will be inhibited by the oil. Just do it.

I opened it up and didn't find rust which is great. What i did discover is someone modified it and put on a 10" blade. I added some oil and it cuts really well! I want to put up a block or guard to separate the motor and belt from operator. Thanks for everyone's input.

Thank you so much, I needed some ideas. I like the idea of using tin and I could use a similar shield to keep oil off the motor on my other (8") saw. I'll see if I can get a sheet of tin somewhere. I also plan to upgrade the electrical cord as it is ungrounded... another trip to the hardware store! Does anyone know if a 3 prong cord with an inline switch exists or if would I have to build a switch box? Thanks in advance. Feel free to offer any advice, I'm all ears.

Update: this thing cuts like a champ. I still need to build in the safety features but it has been uber hot. I have a blade guard (proper size) on order. I added a vise to assist with guiding. The Craftsman motor is pretty old and I'd like to turn it 180 degrees to set behind the saw, but there are no directions for reversing the direction in which the shaft spins. Ideas? Also, since the former Owner put a 10" blade the saw, what damage can that do if I leave it on rather than going back to an 8"? Thanks for following along!

Great sleuthing! I skimmed it and will dive into the thread tonight.
