I've been playing with some Blue Mountain as another (sort of) break from the fire magnetite/obsidian. Had a killer chunk that was super fractured, which was a huge bummer because when I put the pieces back together like a puzzle there were some spectacular scenes. After cutting the 4th slab and retrieving pieces I saved the remaining half for another time, maybe I'll try to stabilize the chunk or something...I just couldn't watch it crumble any more On top of the stability, I had some bad luck with scenes getting wiped out while shaping - never know with that situation, sometimes it turns out OK (or even better), and others not so much. Thought I'd share those that made the cut, mostly. Thanks for looking! I really like this one, but it was one of those where some of the scene was removed and it lost much of its appeal. I still like it though, it looked like an old sticker or something, peeling/tearing off to expose the next layer. BMJ1 by Kevin, on Flickr This was from the rock that wanted to be gravel. It broke on the dop and doesn't resemble anything close to what it was originally going to be. It recovered a bit and wasn't a total loss, which I'm grateful for. BMJ2 by Kevin, on Flickr This next one is from the sister slice to the last piece. It also wanted to commit gravelcide, but not quite as bad. BMJ5 by Kevin, on Flickr The last two are from slabs I've been cutting here and there the last couple of weeks. A lot of colors I'm not used to with this material, but I'm digging it! I don't know what the second and third were suppose to be. They tell a story. With rocks, plans turn into gravel so mark those up as wins.

The 2nd and 3rd are beautiful even if they didn’t turn out according to plan. I like that last one, too. Those curves are so dynamic and dramatic.

Take some off the left side. Lots of options but the elbow sticking out doesn't add anything. I normally wouldn't say anything but something went wrong and a fresh approach would be good. Been there.

That's one of the cool things about rocks, everyone sees something different. I actually like the shape as-is, my disappointment was due to a dulling of color, and there was more of a sun at the bottom-center, that area wiped out a bit in color and detail.

ok. Many preforms have very different tops and bottoms and grinding can destroy or enhance the patterns. Sometimes the dome is a hybrid of the top and the bottom and can be a real mess. I make flat tops and low domes when I am concerned.

Wow jasperfanatic! These are amazing! Spectacular recovery on the ones that gave you fits! I see the "sticker" coming up on that first one! I love those colors in BMJ that you see in 2nd and 3rd pictures! Those tones in the last two are also amazing...and I'm not an expert, but I don't remember seeing pics of any other BMJ with those color tones.

There has to be a cabbing corollary to Mike Tyson's, " everyone has a plant 'till they get punched in the mouth." After that, it's all in how you roll with it, and you rolled admirably. Had you not stated that there were issues, I never would have guessed. That yellow thread in #s 2 and 3 is something else!
I’m with you on #1. I would not change it. I like the shape as it is.

Beauties! Hard to pick a favorite, but #3 is scrumptous. The last 2 with those colors are awesome, too.

Jasperfanatic, we all feel your pain when cabs don't come out as expected but what you produced is elegant and beautiful.
