Its hard to say without holding it in the hand and even then its hard to say for some pieces. There is nothing in the photos that tells me these are not pet wood so you get the final call. My first impression is that the things that look like growth rings in the first piece are a bit bold and irregular and more likely to be the circular pattern left from some sort of concentrically formed nodule. . . . but. . . . All are attractive and worth bringing home.

I would really love to know how to ID pet wood- is it mostly a matter of learning what it looks like on your region of the country, or are there certain characteristics I can look for? Thanks for your help! 🙂

It may be, but it looks very different than the chert that I normally collect around here.

ericabelle I am not sure where you are but I have collected in the Sedalia area down to Cole Camp (Mozarkite area) and over to Warsaw. When they put the high school in at Sedalia there was a lot of Chert like that. My in-laws live in Sedalia MO. so that was how I stayed away from my mother in law's repeated stories. I think my father in law used me as an excuse to get away too. Each area has its own minerals. the Mozarkite is just 22 miles south but the Mozarkite looks much better than the normal chert from Sedalia.
