Here's some pics of our newest baby hawk. We've had 3 babies each year for the last 5 years, but we are unsure if there are any more still in the nest. We're hoping there's at least one more so he has someone to play with.

Mom and dad were making an awful lot of noise all day today. We couldn't figure out what the heck it was all about. Started to worry one of the kids was in trouble, but then we saw the 2 of them in the back yard - one in the apple tree and the other on the roof of the greenhouse. We went out to dinner and when we got back they were still making a commotion, so Vince decided to go scope out the situation from the north end of our lot.
He found the reason for all the noise.
Old Mr. Hooty had been in that tree all day and Mom and Dad didn't like it one bit.
Combat! Picture is blurry, but it is an action photo.
Here's the REAL reason they were so upset.
Devil owl!

The last baby fledged today! I'm a happy camper knowing we have 3 again this year. The last one to fledge had a bath and flew into the plum tree.
He's still learning how to hop from branch to branch and keep his balance.
You can still see his little downy feathers on his back.
The other 2 were in the apple tree in the back. They're close together in this picture.

drocknut and jasoninsd - it's my pleasure. We're pretty proud that the Coopers have come back and nested in our tree the last 5 years. We do our best to try to make our yard enticing for them. Then we get to watch the babies grow up, learn how to be hawks and go off and find their own territory to raise families next year.
BTW, Vince gets the credit for the pictures. He's way better at it than I am.

Vince was wondering how some of the rocks he had on a stump outside the saw shop were getting knocked off. Now he knows.
You can see all the smoke in the air from the Rafael fire yesterday morning in this picture.

I have a pair of coopers on a nest in a large ponderosa near our house and standing sentry in other trees nearby. I feed at least two pairs of road runners and they pay a great deal of attention to the hawks. The roadrunners will come to the door, clatter their bills for hamburger, and gulp down one or two marble sized pieces of burger. Or if feeding young on the nest, pickup the burger and run off with it. But before they will even think about the third one, they cock their head and eye the sky presumably wary of the coopers hawks. Sort of like the rule of not having too many soldiers light their smoke off of the same match. No photos. I don't like to handle the camera and the hamburger at the same time.

This morning we saw the 3 kids come swooping down into the plum tree to get some water out of the tub we put out for them. Then all of a sudden another one flew in. We have 4 kids! We have never had more than 3 and up until now we have not seen all 4 of them together. It's funny, because we were talking about how vocal this group is and that it was unusual all 3 were together all the time.
In previous years it has been that 2 would hang together and one was always kind of a loner. It was rare to see them all together. Well #4 has truly been a loner, because it's been almost a month since they fledged and this is the first time we've seen him.

Nice grouping of Coopers. Are mom and dad still around watching over them and bringing them some chow?

Lovely pictures. I respect the birds being found/spotted when the background is cluttered and probably not much bird movement. The owl must have been distressing for the hawks. Glad it found something else for dinner.
