Here are the rocks that I got from Lowe's that are in flower bed. I think the name Lowe's has listed for the rock is desert rocks, about $12-$15 for 50lb bag. sorry for the poor pic quality but camera was about to die. 2 weeks in 60/90, 1week in 120/220 These just got finished w/ 8days in 500 Some never did shape up, some had too many cracks/vugs and I don't know if the brown/orange/red ones will ever take a shine but the others are looking like they will.

Dang, those look pretty darn good for garden rock. We have a Lowes coming in up near me, first Lowes to come into Minnesota, be awhile before it opens it's doors though. I'll have to look at Walnut next year and see if they have anything like that.

My mom recently added 10 bags of Lowes rocks to the side garden of her house. My sister-in-law and I are chomping at the bit to go through them. Yes, she's addicted now too. The last time she was down visiting we spent about in hour in the other rocks in the garden, spittin and rubbin. She's got a good eye for rocks!

they have "river rocks" at Walmart in the section where you can buy dried flowers. I never bought any, but some bags look like they're filled with Agates and Jaspers.
I think the price was something like $1.50 CDN for a 3 or 5 pound bag.
The dollar store also carries river rocks... never bought any, but I think it's the same supplier as walmart.

You're always amazing me as to where rocks can be found!! It's bad enough that I walk around looking down all the time bumping into things, now I won't even be able to go shopping without thinking there may be hidden little treasures even in the stores!! All I can say is wow!, these are real rockhounds here!!!

Robert, Those are looking good. I like the way the red/orange seems to be underneath the white, like you've sanded it away (which, of course, you have). Those will shine nicely, I think. Not too shabby for 25-30 cents a pound. Let us see the final results.
I've looked at rocks at our Lowe's since you first messaged me about the Desert Rocks. They didn't have any of those, but they do seem to have some interesting possibilities in their bags of river rocks. I've also looked at a couple aquarium stores. One sells what they call candy stripe rock (white with red swirly lines) for about $2.50 a pound. I can't tell yet if it will take a shine so I haven't gotten any. I may have to take the plunge.

Not bad at all. Do all the rocks look as good as the pics you posted?
You just can't beat the price. I'll bet they take a real good shine.

Hey tell, for the most part what u see is what i got. The ones that are black and white (top of 3rd pic) I had the most problems with - the black parts are softer than the white and the stone would break down into smaller pieces pretty fast. The black parts also had lots of pits/vugs. I have one that has a black base with a gray/red swirl on top, man it looks cool but couldn't get it to hold up so I took out and kept as is. I'll look for it and try and take a pic.

years and years ago home depot here had the bags of river rock at 8 bucks for a 50 lbs bag,, it was rose quartz heavy,, some very nice and clear even,, was so amazed by it. i tried to dig some out of the garden when i moved in 99 but couldnt save so much without a huge ordeal so the lucky one who got my old place has a great start on a collection.

I have seriously thought about going to our local nursery to see what type of rocks they have and if I could just buy a small amount. I am running out of containers and room to put my rocks until my dad gets his shed built and my rock saw/grinder fully set up. Tami
