I've often heard people talk about Bahia agates and how beautiful they are. I picked some up from the Rock Shed but was very disappointed in the tumbled results. They were pretty blah after a couple weeks in coarse grind. I had one that was a little too large to tumble as is, so I decided to cut it. Wow! What a beauty inside. So I cut more... All gorgeous pastel water level agates. They remind me of translucent prairie jaspers. A view of the outer and inner sides of a few of the agates. A close up of the prettiest one. It glows in sunlight. It was so true you can't judge a book by its cover with these rocks. I'll definitely pick up some more. I love when rocks with ambigous exteriors reward you for taking a chance on them. 😍😍

I bought some of those from the Rock Shed a while back and finally threw some in the tumbler a couple weeks ago. They certainly don't look like much in their rough state, but they look like they clean up well. My daughter echoes your sentiments and kept saying how amazing it was that ugly rocks can turn out so pretty.

I love rocks that have a hidden "treasure" inside...kind of like the Ugly Ducklings of the mineral world!

There are many more variations on coloration etc

I agree about the treasures inside. It makes rockhounding and polishing so fun. It's kind of like opening presents. saxplayer I wondered about that when I received them. I was hoping for some eye agates perhaps. What came in where some fairly smooth layered nodules with typical deep agatey pits. They reminded me of prairie agates. I guess I didn't think about the fact that the layers would mean they were water levels inside the rocks. I think that now that I used the saw to clean them up and slice them, they'll tumble much better.
