I recently purchased a pound of each step of rock tumbling grit. The first two steps are silicon carbide and the last two are aluminum oxide. All of my previous grit has come with instructions and this one did not so I was wondering what amount of each step would go into a 3lb tumbler barrel. Thanks!

The book says 2 tablespoons for each pound of rock in stages 1-3 and half that for polish. I am cheap so go with half the recommended in stage 1-3 and add more if the rocks tell me they need it when I have a peek later.

I’m with @grieg. For my 3lb barrels, I rarely even use a full 3 tablespoons because I was seeing a lot of grit in my weekly cleanouts. I would suggest basing the grit on how long you prefer to run the course for and just keep an eye on what it looks like at the end of that time. I dry my slurry to add back to later batches, so unused grit is mostly recovered but I don’t like to see a lot of grit in the slurry leftover.
The flip side of that argument is that if you don’t see grit in your slurry at the end, you may have broken it down quickly and run the barrels without really doing much towards the end, so a little grit at the end is not a bad thing to see either.
