Saturday I secided to treat myself to a trip over to the local bead and rock shop. I was going to look for some brightly colored rough to add to add to my local tumbles. I just love digging in the skids of mixed rock and agate...feel like a little kid searching for treasure . As usual, I found some fun things. Here's my finds before cleanup. Here the treasure all cleaned up. I managed to wait an entire day before I broke out the tile saw. Sadly the large chunk of petrified wood exceeds my saw's ability to cut. Bummer. I'll try to face polish instead. Here are some of the pieces before cutting. I have lots of pictures so I'll post more later. No idea what this is.Bloodstone maybe? It has orange red sprays in it. Another odd one. Looks like a mixture of jasper, agate and some opal bits. It has some cool dendrites in it. I'll get more uploaded later. Wait until you see the amazing agate I found inside a piece of a broken nodule. ❤❤

Those are just flat out awesome! The Rock Shed has a "miscellaneous" bin which I LOVE digging through whenever I get over there! I've found some pretty cool "stuff" in that bin...and I have to call it stuff as I can't identify them! LOL That being said...I would agree with the Bloodstone ID on that one.

Those orange red sprays in the green rock look like plumes. Need a better picture, preferably wet.
The other odd one reminds me of Polka Dot Agate.

You're lucky to have The Shed nearby Jason. What a cool place ti hang out. I would spend soooo much money if it was near me. Here' a few more pics from the trove. Here''s the little broken agate nodule and another agate that I thought might make nice tumble pieces or small slabs. This one showed deep purple windows and I had high hopes for it. It ended up being unlike anything I've seen before. It was filled with moss or inclusions that were rusty red. I'll have to see if it will take a polish. I wondered about Polka dot agate as well. I have another small agate that looks exacrly like it as well as some jasper pieces that look like they're from Waahingron or Oregon. I'll get some better pics this week and upload them. I found a nice piece of palm wood (root?) in a bin and it sliced up stellar. ...and because I watch too much Youtube and I wanted to cut open a piece of coral too... Not idea what I'm acrually going to with it now but at least I can say I've cut one open. 😆

Jasper nodules. They sure are pretty. They're about hand sized. A nice piece of petrified wood. I love the rinf textures and red and navy colors. The most amazing thing I found was a blackskin agate nodule. The slab on the top is a piece of it. It's nothing like the others I cut and tumble. It has pinks and oranges and is filled with white fortifications. The one on the bottom is more typical. I'm begining to think that the Blackskin and Agua Nueva agates are probably my favorites along with anything mossy.

Thanks brian. I really like it too. I wonder if anyone on the boards knows what kind it is. It looks sort of pacific northwestern to me. The material in the skids is a combination of normal and sometimes quite unusual. The collections the store bought from had good taste Have any of you all seen material like this jasper before?

Jasper nodules. They sure are pretty. They're about hand sized. It may have been said already but these resemble Cold Mountain thundereggs to me.

They're about hand sized. It may have been said already but these resemble Cold Mountain thundereggs to me. Interesting. Of all the Cold Mountain Thunderegg I've picked up (probably 20-30 pounds total), I've never seen it like this. Of all the CMT I've picked up, it's always a "conglomerate" of small nodules (nothing bigger than quarter), rather than one large singular nodule like this one is...

I was going to suggest that those jasper nodules look like Butterfly Wing jasper, but 'dule beat me to it.

The key word was "resemble" but now that I look again the rind is completely wrong. As a side note, I've cut a bunch of CMT I ordered on two occasions from the Gem Shop and they were normal thundereggs in the 2" to 3" range and I can't quite picture the conglomerate of small nodules you're talking about. Most of what I cut was crap but several had wild looking jasper agate that made big beautiful cabochons.

I hope my post didn't come across as snotty or know-it-all...because I think we all know I suck at identifying anything! LOL I had to dog for this, and not the best pic, but this kind of shows the "conglomerate" type of rock I've usually gotten. I will also concur with your assessment about the quality of rough...over 90% (or so it seems) just doesn't result in good slabs...

Nah I didn't take it that way Jason - I should have looked at it closer and read the other comments before spouting off. The rind isn't even close to the same and it doesn't have the typical orange/brown base that CMTs typically start with even with the variability they can have.

I looked up the butterfly wing jasper and it really does look like the same material. When I saw them in the skid I thought they would be some sort of Owyhee like nodules. Guess you can find similar things all around the world. Thanks a bunch for all the input everyone I read that the butterfly is rare. I'm kind afraid to touch it now. I bought the round one as a display piece and was going to cut the other for tumbling pieces. Not tumbling that now. I also got a chance to snap a close up of the bloodstone sprays today. Sorry I took so long to reapond on that amygdule .

kyoti - Those close-up pics of the Bloodstone looks stunning! If I were you, I'd go back to the shop and pick up as many of those Butterfly Wing Nodules that you can find! Those are stunning!!!
