It does look sort of like a fossil but I'm not an expert on fossils. I wish I had rocks like that in my neighborhood!

Yeah, I debated on whether to post this on the Rock Identification forum or Fossils and Artifacts forum. Really, the oolitic chert nearby was the tie breaker. I've just been amazed at the variety of chert available in southern Missouri. I'm not from Missouri, but I've really come to appreciate this state for its rocks!

I strongly suspect that your first honey comb rock is a fossil, but beyond my kin. Search images of invertebrate fossils and you will likely come up with a tentative identification. Fossil inverts are divers, complex, and numerous. Folks that have been studying them all of their academic careers are capable of being stumped. Enjoy your finds and realize that not all of them are slam dunks for identifications or "understanding".

Well, whatever it is, I like it. Although I don't think it will tumble well since some of the circles have large pits in them. It will have to go in my fossil box instead! =)

Its your rock, the price is right and you can do anything you want with it and even some things that you are tempted not to do because you are curious. Cherts often are surprises when polished (tumbled or otherwise) in that they are hard and sometimes have contrasting inclusions.

About 90% of the rocks I tumble are chert; and I love looking at them after they have only tumbled a week because some of them change so much. In fact, I find myself putting in more and more oddly shaped ones with obvious rinds just to see what happens!
