Tuesday and Wednesday I did the initial grind on somewhere around 17 cabs. I was able to finish these ones up today (technically yesterday by the time I'm posting this! LOL). PIC 1-3: Fairburn Agates - These are the first Fairburns I've cabbed. They came from an estate auction in Crawford, Nebraska which miket missed. They do have fractures in them...but they held together. Wabi Sabi stephan! PIC 4: Madagascar Dendritic Agate - There's a little bit of pitting in the softer left side...but that right side has a gloss finish! PIC 5: Montana Moss Agate - This was labeled as such when I got the material from Brian (the rest of the materials below are also from Brian and his daughter! ) PIC 6: Brenda Agate - Tommy identified this material. I love the looks of this stuff! PIC 7: Maury Mountain Moss Agate - This one was a bear to get a decent picture! There was one spot with a very slight undercut on the moss, so I was pretty pleased. PIC 8-9: Polychrome Jasper - I was only able to get slightly better than a matte finish on these. I could tell around the 500 stage they weren't going to get a gloss-like finish on them. They remind me of Noreena with regards to how they feel and act when working them. I still love this material though! It was a long day...hope you enjoy the pics.

Beautiful job. Are these all done on the slant lap?

Great cabs. I LOVE the second and third Fairburns. Thanks Beth! That first one is a killer in my opinion! That third one was a sonofagun to work. It's a large cab, but the slab was thin...so the dome is very low. I struggled with that one for awhile until I finally got it. The first one has a druzy pocket on the backside as it was the slab cut right next to the third cab. Beautiful job. Are these all done on the slant lap? Thanks Ali! Yep. All were done on the slant cabber. I find it SUPER difficult to work straight edges on that thing, so I've been predominantly working ovals and teardrop shapes...with the occasional rounded triangular shape thrown in...

Straight edges are hard on it, go smaller on your cab on see if that helps

Mostly because I'm trying to capture "all" of some fortification pattern. However, I need to knock out a bunch of smaller cabs to have a decent "supply" of all sizes! (Plus, I can use less wire when wire wrapping with smaller ones! LOL)

Because of the wheel surface I found if I went smaller the easier it was to do a cab on it
The hardest thing for me was getting a decent dome

Beautiful! Those Fairburns are all fantastic! The rest look incredible, too! My daughter is not going to believe that is the same stuff we sent to you. I think that Maury Mountain is my favorite. I just love seeing all of the different colors of moss in one place. You also did a fantastic job with the patterns in the polychrome. The second to last reminds me of a Georgia O’Keefe painting.

Your domes look super! I love the one with the druzy, but they are all top notch.

Thanks Brian! I love those Fairburns! It'll be tough to let those go! LOL I think the Montana Moss Agate is my favorite out of this batch...it has moss AND fortifications! LOL Again, a super special thank you to you guys for the generosity with the material. These were all fun to work...and I think they look gorgeous (the material!). And yes, that O'Keefe painting is spot on! Beautiful cabs! Thanks for the morning eye candy. Thanks Robin! And you're more than welcome for the eye candy...it was either pics of these or a pic of me rolling out of bed this morning...which would have resulted in coffee spit out all over the breakfast table! LOL

Terrific, Jason! I think that your second-to-last cab is the winner — great pattern.

Terrific, Jason! I think that your second-to-last cab is the winner — great pattern. I really appreciate that Gary! That second to last cab was an interesting grind. That "seam" going down the middle seemed slightly harder than the rest of the cab. It stayed pretty high after the "initial" grind and I had to spend a bunch of time carefully bringing that area down to the correct level. I was just surprised by that...

Your domes are way better than mine ever were using that machine Thanks Ali! I keep thinking I want to try using an actual cabbing machine one of these days...but I'm afraid I'd have to start all over learning a new technique on a new piece of equipment - I know it's a different style on those! LOL

It is a different style but once you start doing it you won't go back to that lap, except maybe to polish
And as fast as you picked that up, a regular cab machine will be a piece of cake

LOL It's a bit different, but the concept is the same. Doesn't take long to get used to it and it is so much faster! I think you should try it.

I keep toying with the idea of asking her to let me borrow it. The only reason I don't, is if I like it, I'm going to have to ask how much she wants for it....and since it's 4" wheels, am I just going to end up wanting a 6" or 8" down the line. It's such a vicious cycle with this "hobby"! LOL
