Here’s a red one I got. It has a five minute polish job. I need to find a bigger box to store them in. Luckily one of my daughters kind of gets it.

Thank you MsAli and jasoninsd . The photos don’t do it justice. This is a little better but still not like holding it in your hand. I like the blue ones better but this is pretty cool too.

Beautiful! I wonder how many people have come across one of those without having a clue as to what it is. My kids have some crayons that look a lot like that first picture. Too bad those crayons don't polish up like that sapphire does!

Too bad those crayons don't polish up like that sapphire does! The first one I ever saw was at the QIA show in around 1985. I had some experience cutting star garnet and some natural corundum. By luck, I recognized what it was by a flashes on the side of the boule. The end had been sawn off and it wasn’t polished. I think I was dabbling in faceting at the time too, so I hadn’t see too many full boules. That one is now my avatar photo.

broseph82 I did not make the boules. The process is not so difficult but it requires some extreme temperatures. My entire collection is about 408 grams or 2038 ct. The red ones fluoresce strongly under UV light. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not obsessed with this stuff. I just like it more than anything else.

The big slabs in the NW of the scale look like this when polished.

LOL jasoninsd . It’s truly the biggest one I’ve ever seen. The star is better than the photo shows. They’re difficult to photograph. I’ll try to get a better picture. I’m going to slab one of the bigger ones. I have a macro lens for the iPad. I might have to attach it to get a decent photo. When I hit it with the UV light, it appears black with no star. The red ones fluoresce strongly.
