jadecarver has 4x1/2 diamond hard wheels in various grits. To complete a cab using an arbor, soft wheels are needed. The only diameters that I am familiar with are 4,6 and 8.
Starting out on a limited budgets, I recommend a used machine or a lapidary arbor. Without soft wheels, the cabs need to be finished in a tumbler.

I joined the local rock club but would like to be able to get the general shape of the rock before moving on at the club as it takes the longest for me.

My local rock club is also quite a ways from my house and is only open for a total of 9 hours every week.

perkins17 Start saving money. It seems as though you’re dug in like a tick on this hobby. It can be very rewarding but it isn’t cheap. I’ve been at it for 35 years or so. I can say that I still love it. It hasn’t made me rich. My kids are gonna kill me when I’m dead. Interacting with people on RTH is awesome. There’s nothing like finishing the perfect cab, opening a perfect tumbler barrel, slabbing material you love or the often overlooked faceting. It’s great to have you here communicating your issues. This hobby is all about sharing your work. I think this is the greatest group of rock enthusiasts anywhere. We always like to see photos.

There is absolutely nothing better than opening or looking at shiny rocks.
