No chatter but one of then got a huge groove in it. Are you getting the screw down tight? Yes. They are SUPER tight! (My wife doesn't let me put the lids on the jars when we're done eating. She can't get them off afterward. I have a tendency to crank everything that can be tightened with everything I've got! LOL) So, I've got to figure out what's making these chatter...maybe that's part of the problem. The 500 is super "bouncy". Yep, worn wheels an letting the cab get hot is the secret sauce for obsidian and jade. Do a few 100 crazy lace cabs, or Montana…, and you’ll be in good shape. Those colors are amazing! I thought I remembered to let the Obsidian get hot...but not too hot it would crack anything. Right?!? I was amazed at the colors...which is why I really want to get this whole polish thing figured out! LOL I’ve never cracked obsidian with heat

LOL I’ve never cracked obsidian with heat I've never cracked Obsidian with heat either but it can heat up your fingers It is formed from a volcano so it can stand the heat, us maybe not so much lol. I just find that polishing damp does a better job and keeps it cool. I mostly polish with my hands versus a dop so when it gets hot, add a few squirts of water. I have a friend with a kiln and I gave her a bunch of my scraps. None broke in her kiln. She wanted to test it for some jewelry thing she was working on and didn't want to use actual cabs.

I gotta ask where that obsidian is from? Scratches aside, they look pretty incredible. I actually got it from my sister. She came to visit my folks and brought me this box of Obsidian. The deal was that I was supposed to make a cab and wrap it for her...which is why I'm frantically trying to get this figured out! LOL I just threw the box away yesterday that had the name of the place on it. I'll find out the name of the shop. I know it was over near Seattle. I looked on their website (which I can't remember now) and couldn't make out what type of Obsidian this is...I thought it was Rainbow...but after seeing this MONSTER piece of Rainbow Obsidian that tntmom posted a few years ago, I know it's not Rainbow! I’ve never cracked obsidian with heat I've never cracked Obsidian with heat either but it can heat up your fingers It is formed from a volcano so it can stand the heat, us maybe not so much lol. Sometimes I hate it when I can't see the forest for the trees! I should have known that a rock formed in a dang volcano ought to be able to handle the heat! LOL I have to use a dop...I learned quickly I'm not that coordinated using a flat lap to do it without them being dopped...it's the unintentional manicures I can't handle! LOL

OK - I just Googled Mexican Royal Velvet and Washington. (@jadedvision) I'm sure it was lapidarycentral.com where she got it. Kristine - thanks for letting me know the type...I was going to ask eventually. LOL

I’ve never cracked obsidian with heat I swore I read that somewhere...but I've overloaded on Obsidian posts today, so I could have jumbled something along the way! LOL When I first started with obsidian I was taught how to dry burnish it. It will get super hot and it doesn't crack, but it will burn the crap out of your fingers.

Thanks for sharing your troubles, it resulted in a lot of good information being consolidated in a single thread. Bookmarking this one.
While I have never used the machine you are using I have looked into it quite a bit as we want to be able to make proper cabs versus the vibe pendants we make now. I wonder if it is more difficult/takes longer to break in the discs you are using versus wheels on an arbor. We have a small trim saw/arbor combo machine with the cheapest diamond wheels I could find (just used for tumbles) and we can exert a fair amount of pressure. Even these cheap wheels get broken in after a session or two and there are quite visible rogue diamonds creating large gouges at the beginning.

jasoninsd - I was also busy yesterday. Glad to see you got the info you were looking for.
Looked up obsidian (glass) this morning in what was considered by many to be the ultimate reference book. Published in 1972 - before resin laps.
John Sinkakas - Gemstone And Mineral Data Book. It has more info in it than I've seen anywhere in one book. But it's OLD! 1972...!!!
For sanding: 1200 CeOx on leather, or 1200-3000-8000 diamond on wood or leather. The wood or leather - with diamond slurry embedded into it - would perform differently than the diamond bonded in a resin. Especially on a newer resin lap. (Some people would have tossed the Eastwinds I use as "worn out".)
For polish: CeOx on felt or leather.
That info fits pretty well with both approaches suggested in earlier replies posted to your thread here.
Tell the pit bull it's okay to come back in the house now... .
Cheers!

That was quite the journey and this place is completely awesome! So cool to see people coming out of the shadows to drop some experience and knowledge on those in need. jasoninsd, you have been flying through cabs/wraps so fast lately I can see why this speed bump threw you for a loop. Good luck and I'm sure we'll see a shiny mess of obsidian cabs later today.

Wonderful birthday, BTW. You have a keeper. LOL! But, you already knew that. I actually slept like a baby last night! (I was up half the night crying! LOL) - Kidding, I slept very well. I swore I read that somewhere...but I've overloaded on Obsidian posts today, so I could have jumbled something along the way! LOL When I first started with obsidian I was taught how to dry burnish it. It will get super hot and it doesn't crack, but it will burn the crap out of your fingers. I will add oven mitts to my supply list! LOL I dop everything, but I've heated up other stuff to the point the metal dop itself gets hot...that might have been a little excessive! LOL Thanks for sharing your troubles, it resulted in a lot of good information being consolidated in a single thread. Bookmarking this one. Even these cheap wheels get broken in after a session or two and there are quite visible rogue diamonds creating large gouges at the beginning. Thanks Al! I am so grateful for everyone's input on this! I really don't have the experience with any other machine to give a legitimate answer as to the break-in period. I think I have a tendency to go lighter than I need to on the finer grits. I've had so many material undercut, or orange peel, that I think I err on the cautious side when it isn't necessary... Also on that machine remember sometimes smaller is better. Thanks Ali! I have been making too many large cabs since the beginning. I'm trying to switch a lot of the preforms I'm prepping now over to smaller... jasoninsd - I was also busy yesterday. Glad to see you got the info you were looking for.

Thanks Vince! Well...I'll be a monkey's uncle! I actually have that book - Robin told me I should get it awhile back! I can't believe it didn't dawn on me to go look up the information myself! To be honest, I just went looking for it...and can't find it. I'll have to ask my wife where she put it...last I knew, it was on the coffee table. God knows I probably didn't move it! LOL That was quite the journey and this place is completely awesome! Good luck and I'm sure we'll see a shiny mess of obsidian cabs later today. Thanks Jesse! I was super stoked to see Kristine (along with EVERYONE else!) chime in on this! I knew she's been known to be the Obsidian Guru! It seems even Speed Buggy can get a flat tire every once in a while! LOL - I had to walk away from them for the day...so I cut preforms. I might put on the headphones later tonight, listen to some AWESOME music, and go at these again to see how much progress I can make on these beasts!

A person should be able to work on all kinds of material. I made a decision to only use material that is worked with diamond.

I'm still in the process of trying to figure out what my limits are...sometimes I think my limits are far beyond what they really are. I figure you can't fully appreciate success without failure(s). And with every failure there's an opportunity to learn something new...and I've definitely learned some things with this Obsidian fiasco.

Hey Krystee tntmom ! It's great to see you on here giving your sage obsidian advice.
jasoninsd I was going to tell you to go to cerium right after the 3,000, but Krystee beat me to it. Haven't been on the forum all day (working on a pendant).
Sorry you were having such trouble today. Here's an idea -- knock off for the night and watch the new episode of Dino Hunters on Discovery. OMG! I just watched the first episode of Dino Hunters we recorded from last night! There looks to be some REALLY exciting finds...and some horrible tragedies this season! I'm hooked again! LOL
