I have been meaning to make this thread for a while now, but I've been too busy, tired, preoccupied, procrastinating and lazy to do it before now.
I just wanted to create a thread that I could have a running thank you for the wonderful people of RTH that I have come across in a personal way or purchased a good/great deal on some spectacular material. I will mostly post pics of the material I have bought or hunted with or from a member of this cool forum.
They will be in no particular order and more of when the rocks hit me kind of thing...
The first will be the most recent person I have had an interaction with on the forum.
My wife and I were planning our 10th wedding anniversary for the end of May. We like to travel and decided to do a road trip to the Rockies for some hiking and fresh air.
I had talked (easily) my wife into heading out through South Dakota and then south to Colorado. I was feeling convinced I could find somewhere to find some rocks along the way and after seeing what jasoninsd was finding in SD, I knew that was the way. I figured I could possibly get Jason to lead me close to one of his honey holes for a shot at taking home some fun South Dakota rocks.
I contacted Jason through the forum and of course he answered all of my stupid and not stupid questions about the area in preparation of our trip. He gave us info, recommendations and warnings about our travels and stay. I inquired about some area to do some hounding and he gladly offered to give me information and guidance to any place I would like to go to find rocks. I asked if he would be around and like to go out with me and he said he would be and would like to.
We kept in touch all along the way. Fast forward to the day of hounding that we agreed on, which was my actual anniversary day...
Now, let me preface by saying that I had a very good idea of who Jason was from his presence on the forum. He seemed like an honest and kind person. I only had just over 100 posts at the time and I'm sure he didn't have much of a clue to who I was as a person. So, we/he had a bit of trepidation and anxiety over meeting each other and what exactly to expect.
So, the night before the weather turned, it got pretty windy/cold and my wife pulled out of the hunt. We were going to drive our car to follow Jason to the hunting spot the next day. I asked Jason the night before if he would mind just taking me out while my wife stayed in town with the car. I felt bad about asking and he agreed to it.
My wife dropped me off in the morning at the Dollar General where Jason was waiting to pick me up. We shook hands and exchanged bags/boxes of gifted rocks we had for each other and hopped into the purple Ranger. I was sold right away on this fella being a nice guy. I relaxed quite a bit on the drive to the spot. I was also struck on how hospitable Jason and his wife were. Brenda set us up with breakfast, water and lunch! Very nice considering they have never met me or have any personal connection with me at this point.
We ended up driving out to the Buttes because it rained pretty good the day before and everything was real sludgy, which limited our rock hunting options for that day. We drove in as far as he was comfortable and started walking. We talked, walked and looked for rocks. The more we talked the more I like Jason. He is a very considerate and kind person as he proved to me all day long. We are both certainly interested in rocks. I picked up a lot of rocks (prairie agates, pet wood, etc) and quite a bunch that he considered not worth picking up. I will post pictures as I get them polished and take opinions on what the group thinks. We picked and talked for 3-4 hours and I wish I had many more days to be able to go back. I really had a blast and it is a very beautiful area to spend some time. I was very appreciative that Jason took me to experience a place that I wouldn't have gotten to see without him.
I had too good of a time babbling and looking for rocks that I never took a picture the whole time hunting the in the Buttes... No proof!
We headed back a little early because I knew better than to spend too much of our anniversary picking rocks with a stranger. Jason again was kind enough to let me into his house. He has a beautiful house and a ton of awesome rocks. He kept handing me a new rock or slab and saying take that one with you. He also told me to take some of the impressive amount of Prairie agates that he had in bins and in his rock garden. I told him I felt weird about taking his treasures he spent time hounding for. I offered to buy some from him and he scoffed at it and said take some... I didn't take any. I wished I would have.
My wife picked me up and we were off to an anniversary dinner at a steak house recommended by Jason and it was delicious!
I became quick friends with Jason in the small amount of time I spent with him and appreciate RTH for allowing me to have the experience!
Oh yeah, I asked him to sell me a MFRB of Prairie Agates and he ended up sending me a LFRB and refused payment... dang nice guy... and awesome material that will keep showing up in this thread as I get it processed. Jokes on him though, I'll be sending him a big box of material from my area and some Lake Superior stuff too... Let's see how he likes getting free rocks.
Thank you RTH and jasoninsd
