Very cool zig zag grain pattern on the end. Petrified algae on wood is common in Wyoming. The famed Blue Forest has a lot of it.

some cultures use a banana for scale but all i had was this coke bottle. i can't actually find a ruler LOL

Would have to cut a slab off and polish it and view under a microscope to get any idea of species. Nice find!

Congratulations on the gorgeous find! Some of the best pieces of petrified wood I've found over here in South Dakota are along the Cheyenne River.

thanks all! a) i did find more pieces of wood on this visit, and plenty has been found at this site in the past. b) this was private property and we'd obtained permission from the rancher to keep anything we found. the best i can say is it was in the cheyanne river valley area, but this isn't a spot for free picking generally speaking.

That's interesting! All the wood I've found on the Cheyenne River was on private property too! (Maybe because all the good stuff on public land has been hounded to death...)
