I feel like I've gotten some good tumbles, one thing I have been noticing though is, towards the end of my tumbles, there have been chips in stones that had no visible flaw prior. And I primarily tumble pretty hard material. Is there anything I can do to try to cut down on that. Due to reduction in material, my barrel is normally less full than it was at the beginning stages (I only have rolling tumblers). I have been filling the barrels about 3/4's full with water and stones, because that was what I have read. Is that correct? Would adding more water later possibly lessen the impacts and help? Thanks for any answers.

Are you using ceramic media to cushion the stones?

No, never havew done that, I have them, just have never used them. I add ceramics to make up the volume after the first stage. Add the rocks, then fill the water up to about 3/4 of the stone volume. Ceramic media is the way to go.

"What is RPM of your barrel and size of your barrel?" 3 pound barrels and 34oo rpms, though I think fully loaded (these are dual tumblers) it runs slower than that.

I have never used a barrel that small so can't speak to that. For my 20lb and 40lb Lortone barrels, after much experimentation adjusted to 16-17 RPM to lessen damage. They shipped from factory much faster than that and that wasn't good. On my 12lb barrels, 27-29 which is factory has worked well. I had heard from others that with smaller barrels faster RPMs are typical.
