So here are some picts of some awesome rocks I found while "Deer Hunting" near Vernal, Utah. The kids and I had a great time finding rocks. While hunting, I'd have nieces and nephews bringing me rock after rock. It was quite hilarious walking thru the mountains with gun, radio, water, GPS, extra clothes and my pockets filled w/ rocks and bullets. We had a great time. Here you go........ 1st Shot....the whole lot...lots of jasper, agates and mystery balls (agate nodules), chalcedony. 2nd Shot....the coolest rock I've ever seen.....since I have no freaking clue what it is, I'm calling it ZEBRA AGATE. 3rd Shot....zebra agate on it's side 4th Shot.....zebra agate on some fiery red jasper 5th Shot....some mystery agate balls 6th Shot...fiery red jasper Compare the Deer Hunt from 05... To 04.... OK enough already. I'm finally getting geared up to run some rocks. I've really taken the summer off and with the approaching winter (maybe it'll get here) I'll have some more time to tumble some local goodies. Gaetz

Now that's what I call hunting! You have some really pretty stuff in there. You guys have all your kids out with you when your hunting? You've got the younguns trained pretty good don't you, brining you tons of rocks like that. And that "zebra agate" OMG ... that is totally amazing. You've got to see if you can slab that one with your friends saw, those would be really cool slabs. But then it might be one of those special "keep it like it is" kind of agates too.

Nice lookin' trophys you picked up. Looks like fun. Can't wait to see what you do with the zebra. The jasper is great also. The weather looked MUCH better this year!

I actually have 3 of those "zebras". If you look at the picture (#4) of the zebra on the red jasper, there is another one off to it's left. There is also another one (this one's not that distinct, but equally as cool) in the picture of the mystery balls. It's the black one in the center. If you look closely you can see some of the banding. I actually had my wife stop the truck as I could see it shining like a big piece of black glass. I may try slabbing the black one to see what it's like. I actually had another piece about the size of a softball in the back of my 4wheeler, but lost it when I tipped it over and rolled it about 12 times down the mountain side. At that moment, I wasn't too concerned about finding it!!! Luckily ATV and driver are made it out w/ only minor scrapes.....LOL.

Gaetz, Great rocks! So much for the deer hunt though, huh? It needs to snow a little to get them deer coming down out of the high Uintas. You didn't find any Spanish Mines did you...while you were out wandering the hills? I must admit...that Zebra Agate is pretty darn amazing! I think I would've spent the hunt scouting for rocks rather than those sly muleys. I think it was a successful year anyway. Thanks for sharing your finds. Steve

Holy freakin cow- THat is some hunting trip- Love it all- He I want the box after Gaetz- Oh and be careful on that ATV- A close friend of ours lost his Fiancee to an ATV accident (she too lost it on a hill- but she rolled with the machine- Not a pretty site).

Rockds-
We had a pretty good hunt. Out of 6 licenses, we got 4 deer. I had a small 2 point (or 4 point if you live in the midwest) about 30 yards away from me, but couldn't muster up the gumption to put him down. I'm not really a big animal killer, but would've taken a more mature deer.
Steve-
As for any Spanish Mines, no not this year....dang it. I think I'd rather drive to Wendover, Nevada and drop my paycheck on blackjack than look for the lost "Rhoades Mine"....LOL. I spent half the hunt looking for rocks... I had to watch my step anyway!!!!

Gemmaster- Please tell me more about this? Cher was just telling me about some banded chert and that kind of sparked my attention. However, there are no sharp points or splintering or scaling (or whatever the correct terminology may be) on the pieces that I'd expect to see on chert. But hey, I'm no geologist here!!! I appreciate your input and hope to learn more. I'll Google it up and see if I can find more. thanks gemmaster!!!! Oh, how does it polish? gaetz

Do any of you remember Bill who asked for someone to tumble a laker for him? He sent it to me but it wasn't a laker, he found a site that had a pic that looked very much like this piece and it was called banded chert. Here's a picture of it. Tim, look to see if your's has any transparency or opaqueness to it that would be common to the agate material.

Gaetz, You'd probably have better luck in Wendover than looking for the Rhoades Mine. We used to hunt deer outside of Manilla..right on the Wyoming border before you get to Manilla. We killed some very nice bucks there. Never wanted to shoot anything smaller than a 4 point. If you decide to go next year, you may want to try this area. Not only does it yield good bucks, but the rocks are pretty interesting. I even found a few points and a spear....mostly because of the last few times that I had been, i was more interested in rocks than deer. Steve

Steve-
Finding a spear, now that would be cool!!!!! I'd love to try some different areas for some bigger animals, but my Father-in-law has been hunting this area for more than 45 years. I don't see their family breaking tradition any time soon. I've gone with them for 10 years and never really seen anything much bigger than a small 4point, but the past 2 years have yeilded some nicer 2 and 3 points so I finally got a license. All in all it was a fun trip and it's a nice place to go. It's actually called Red Cloud Loop/Diamond Mountain. It's about halfway between Dutch John and Vernal. Take care,
Gaetz
