I have been reading around and heard some use pea gravel as fill for the first and second stage. I am now running a rotary for the first stage and then a vibe. I don't want to waste ceramics as I have been and was wondering if pea gravel would be a possibility as an alternative. Thank you in advance.

Pea Gravel and small scraps are all I use for filler and cushioning. Only used Ceramics for a while but decided to save on cost. I usually do not put much Pea Gravel in the coarse run, usually only adding it in later stages. I definitely add it to polish stage which runs in UV-18 Vibe and all previous runs were in a Model B Rotary, need about 3 pounds to make up volume difference. That is for a normal Agate/Jasper/Pet Wood run.
I use it a bit more in Quartz/Obsidian/Slabs and Preform runs. For the Quartz/Obsidian runs it's definitely for cushioning, and to replace volume loss as the batch progresses. For the Slabs and Pre-Forms it provides cushioning, and adds more surface contacts for the bigger flat surfaces.
My theory is that why buy Ceramics when Pea Gravel and Pre-Form trimmings are so plentiful and free. I also breakup poor quality slabs into very small pieces.

Thank you HankRocks! I was thinking of buying the unfinished kind. Would those be able to be added to all stages unfinished or would they have to have been tumbled first?
