I just mentioned this in gaetz's thread but for those that didn't see it. Remember a while back when Icetres came on asking if someone could polish a laker he found? I told him I'd give it a go and he sent it on. Unfortunately it wasn't a laker but we figured banded chert from pics we saw but he said to go ahead with it anyway. I took pics before it went in which was Sept 20. I opened that barrel today and am very surprised at what I've found. It doesn't look anything at all like I thought it would ... I really don't know what to think. Before side 1:After side 1: Before side 2:After side 2:Then there's this side that is just totally fractured. UnpolishedPolishedClose-upThis stuff seems really really hard. I'm not sure if I should run it in coarse again for another week with fresh grit and other rough or move it on. Bill if you see this, let me know what you think. I'm leaning more toward the idea that this might be a prairie agate rather than chert. Thanks for looking. Cher

you know, Cher, there is an agatetized pet wood quality to that.........i was thinking that when i saw Gaetz's Zebra agate he found too.....i got some slabs off eBay that looked an awful lot like that and they were sold as pet wood slabs...hmm?
as a sidebar, i brought up the my latest batch of pet wood o show my folks along with a huge chunk of unfinished material that i got from Pho, my dad could hardly contain himself with all the tricks and treat fun he was going to have with that.
anyway, i am wondering what that chunk you have would look like cut up?

It's not mine though KD, this is the one that Bill sent me. He wanted it polished and then was going to give it to a friend. I saw Bill in here the other day, I'm hoping he'll stop in again and can see where this is going before I move on. I'm going to check his profile and see if he left and email address.

I would go again in the coarse grit and see what the next layer shows. Tami

I never even thought of pet wood until KD mentioned it. I guess it does seem to have "rings" in there. I do agree that it needs more time in coarse, hopefully it would clean up the bottom where alll the tiny fractures are. Just thought maybe I should wait until Bill had a chance to look at it though I doubt he'd want it left like this. I just hope that bottom cleans up and smooths out. Thank for your thoughts, appreciate you checking it out.

Hey thanks for your help Cher and the feedback too. I'd be interested to see it cut or a face ground based on these pics. Very curious........ It was found on Madeline Island, WI in Lake Superior. I can take it to the U of Minn. for identification or come to think of it I have a friend who's a geology prof. at Macalaster College in St. Paul.....

Bill, if you want it cut, I can do that now. It would have to go back in coarse for a week but that's not biggy.

Cher, I'd like to see it cut if you don't mind. As I said in a PM, I'm happy to pay any extra costs. I'm sure it would help with identification. Quite mysterious. Many many thanks!!!

Cher I have the same stuff here, it's extremely hard and fractures something aweful! I took a dremel to it a few times and it helped a bit, but all in all I felt mine wasnt worth the effort after it was in course for almost 6 months. I dug it out of a ravine in Alabama along with some petwood, I believe it's prarie agate. It fractures like pet wood but much worse. I wish I had more experience to help you out, you've been a big help to me... Marian

It's very hard to identify anything this way. But, regarding specimen’s conchoidal fracture and waxy luster I would stick to chert.

I'm going to cut it in half, just trying to decide which direction to cut. Lengthwise or straight across the middle ... any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd go length wise (after side 2) to show more banding but I don't think you will go wrong either way.
