I have a contest entry cab that I used dopping wax on which I froze off but there is still a chunk of wax on it that I need help to carefully remove without damaging the cab. How do you guys do it? Please tag me if you have a reply. Thank you in advance.

Please tag me if you have a reply. Thank you in advance. I usually freeze mine and pop it off, carefully scrape the remaining with a razor blade and/or use a little acetone to get the residue off. Would be interested to hear other tricks people may have. I've also tried heating it a little and scraping with a knife but don't typically do that.

Thanks agatewhisperer! I will put it in the freezer for the night and take it out in the morning.

Thanks agatewhisperer! I will put it in the freezer for the night and take it out in the morning. This is just my opinion but if it's still gives trouble when it's cold, don't force it. You could either gently warm it and scrape with a knife or use some solvent to get it off. Maybe others will chime in with another technique.

Just scraping with a razor blade is all I do when some dope wax is left on the cab

Perkins, if the wax is imbedded below the surface I soak the stone in acetone or lab grade alcohol to dissolve the wax. Keep the container tightly closed, slightly shake the container and reuse the solvent. This may take a day or so for the wax to dissolve but it will come out. Some of the plumes I cut have softer spots or crystal pockets that fill with wax when dopped and this works for me. I also use a spot cleaning gun to aid in deep area. Others use vibrator cleaners in the process.

Be careful with a vibrator cleaner some rocks do not handle it well and will break. Be a shame to put that much work into a cab and have it break just getting the wax off. Most solvents work fine, just takes a little time. Most solvents are safe if used outside. Good luck in the contest.

perkins17 if you already popped the dop off after you froze it and there is just a little wax left, you can refreeze (just an hour or so is all you need) and try to scrape it off. Like everyone else has said, a razor blade or I just use an Exacto knife. Any residual wax can be dissolved in a jar of denatured alcohol or acetone (lid on). It doesn't take that long unless there is a glob of wax stuck in a void or something like that. If it's just a small bit on the surface, I will use a Q-tip and just dip that in some alcohol and rub it on the wax. It will come off.

Thank you all! I still have a bit stuck on so I will put it in the freezer and scrape at it later.

for little pores and cracks/vugs place stone in a jar with denatured ethanol from Ace Hardware or Acetone. Both work great acetone may be faster. Probably MEK will also work. Use in well vented areas. You could also try to boil it.

I froze the cab and scraped.at it with a knife. I then sand papered it down.

Use in well vented areas. You could also try to boil it. MEK is rather nasty compared to acetone or DN alcohol. I would avoid that route. well-ventilated area recommended for all three. most drug stores also sell 90%+ isopropanol, which avoids the methanol in DN alcohol. Methanol worries some people, but as far as skin exposure goes, with 5%, you’d pretty much have to bathe in it for ill effects.
