Hello everyone! I live in St Charles MO, I am looking for some place around here to get thin shale stone? I see lots of it off of highway 270, exactly what I am looking for but don't want to pull off a busy highway to pick up shale stone. Does anyone know a rule road river or some place to get thin shale stone? I have searched all over the internet and cant find anything regarding this matter. I have shopped around but the shale stone is way too thick and cant be split. I need the thin shale stone for my waterfall. Any help would be appreciated! This is what I am looking for

I can't help you with specific locations but most the time, if a source of water is bear a mineral, that mineral is in or around the water source.

As a geologist I have had to get rock samples in some places where parking the truck was not a good idea. We use the drop & shop method. Early on a Sunday when there is the least amount of traffic. My wife drops me of with several milk cases with handles and drives off. I fill the cases and she returns 30 minutes later (way before cell phones) and we quickly load the truck and drive off. We use the same method for getting geologic photos of road cuts. If you are stopped you are getting material for your kids teacher for a science project.
From the photo and the need to split the rock what you are looking for is slate. Shale will fall apart quickly if you use it around water. This is however easy to get. Try your local stone yards or landscape & building supply. Blue slate from the eastern US is sold for walkways and is available all over. You may even be able to find some broken scrap at one of the yards that you could use. It is not that expensive.

ewillustration What wpotterw said. Shale unless it has a high silt content (siltstone, sandy shale) is prone to decompose fairly rapidly. What you need is slate. Look for old slate shingles. Some thinly bedded sandstone (flag stone) at a landscaping place might also work.

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! We have a TON of slate over here in the Black Hills...but I don't think that's going to be within your commuting distance.

As a backpacker, that is a material that is encountered a lot especially at higher elevations above tree line. I'm trying very hard to remember the last time I was practically "skating" on loose pieces of this for hours and trying not to fall down. It might have been on the Spanish Peaks in southern NM. If that is correct, and you know anyone who lives near there, they could perhaps verify that and maybe get you some.
Also, I would check with various greenhouses and gardening centers. It seems I have seen this at times for sale in such places.
