I'm cutting my way through a few boxes of Mohave agates and jaspers. Mostly from the Cady Mountains area. My favorite so far is what looks like a fine grained porcelain jasper. The pattern is something like a picture jasper, but the fine grain and colors remind me of Morrisonite and Imperial Jasper. It doesn't have distinct orbs, but there are some faint, orb-like patterns, as seen in the middle and middle-right of the slab in the photo. Most fractures are healed very solidly. The slab is about 4-1/2" x 4", to give you an idea of scale. It is as hard as any jasper I have ever tried to grind. At least as hard as Montana agates, if not harder. The 80 grit wheel on my Genie squeals and screams but removes almost no material. It has a waxy feeling when dry, and a slippery, almost opalized feeling when wet. I test polished a little piece and it easily took a high shine, just like fine porcelain jaspers. Has anyone seen rocks like from the Mohave desert area? Could it be opalized pet wood? Morrisonite that got put in the wrong box?

False alarm... I talked to the guy who sold me the rocks and he said it is jasper from Idaho found near the willow creek area and that he must have accidentally mixed in with his Mohave desert rocks. Of course I asked for more, and he said that was his last piece.

Does look a lot like willow creek jasper. Top photo is willow creek, bottom photo is the "near willow creek"

I'm glad we could all help with this! LOL
I cut a piece of opalized pet wood and a piece of Hickoryite today...from what you're describing as to the physical characteristics (minus the grinding), it sounds like it could have been describing the two pieces I cut today!

jasoninsd I like that pet wood. Looks solid, too. I tumbled a few rocks that I am pretty sure are hickoryite. It got real shiny without a lot of drama, unlike a lot of rhyolites.

That petrified wood is from stephan. It's the first opalized pet wood I've worked with. That Hickoryite feels like it's going to take a high polish...so, fingers crossed I do it justice.
