Howdy Folks, Been doing a little cracking today and decided to take a couple of pics of tumble material from a new jasper find I've made near my ranch at Hornitos, Calif. My wife named this one Firefly Jasper because of the multitude of white to red spots against a midnight black to purple background ( I know fireflies glow yellow green but she took artistic license). I guess it would actually be classified as a flowering or poppy-type jasper. The deposit is very small and right in the middle of the worst thistle patch I've ever seen. It consists of a broken up ledge and is mostly in smaller hunks due to weathering. Have found a couple of huge blocks though, if I can ever get them cut. Made myself a little cart to haul hunks out as it's way back into rugged country. Has a lot of hematite and some pyrite ( gold bearing sulfides) in it so some of the of the black- purple areas polish out silvery with golden metallic spots. Interesting material anyway. cabs up nice but I've never tumbled much of it so I thought I'd get me a batch ready for a future load. Thanks for looking.....Mel

That is certainly some spectacular looking rough. How cool is that to be able to find your own new rock type? Even if it is a flowering jasper I can see how it is deserving of its own "common name". I like the name Firefly Jasper, it's catchy.
Most of that rough looks pretty solid too, considering that it came from a weathered ledge. That will make one great tumble!
