Check this out!! This stuff is so freakin' gorgeous, I can hardly stop looking at it. There was one more piece but that's been busted up and is on it's second day in my tumbler as we speak. I've never seen anything like this before so am really amazed by it. It's like huge chunks of glass ... really cool. Here's the whole batch with the closest thing handy for a size measurement. ;D Here's some individual chunks just so you can see the colors up close. I had a shot of the black one but it was blurred. James, you da man, thanks for the great box of goodies. If anyone else is interested, check with James to see what he's got left. Enjoy and thanks for looking. Cher

Cher-
Did you make a bed for those guys or what? I wouldn't want them spending the nights outside. I'd have them right beside me and the wife out in the barn!!!!!
Ok that was a bit over the top!!!! Cool stuff anyway.

LOL Gaeter ... bad Gaeter, bad !!
Pho, yes they are cool like this but I can't help but think of how awesome the Apache Tears turned out so I'm dying to see if I can do the same thing with this stuff. I'll tell you one thing, it's a booger to break up and get any chunks, it just wants to flake off in layers. I found out you just have to hit it harder and then you get chunkier pieces.

Cher,
Just at first glance it looks like you have a piece or two that might possibly have 'gold sheen'. If so it would be a 15 yard lapidary foul to cut it up for tumble rough.
If you take the piece in pic #2 and slice it along those visible lines, angling slightly across a line ot two. Then wet it and move the cut surface around in a good light source. You may see a gold sheen, or a kind of gold schiller effect. It's worth a shot anyway.

Oh shoot Rich, a 15 yard lapidary foul to cut it up for tumble rough? I guess I'm in deep dino doo then. I haven't any way to slab it, all I have is a big ol' splitting mall. Ok, I'll save that piece for last, in the off-hand chance that I might have a saw someday.

Try a local rock shop, or rock club, they will cut it, for a price. And you dont need nuch of a saw. I have a rock rascal and it loves obsidian. I sort of conditions the diamond blade.

We don't have any local rock shops anymore, the last one we had closed down about 25 years ago. Don't have any local rock clubs either, the closest one is nearly an hour away. I've been thinking about getting a tile saw, but would like to be able to cut at least 2 inches, don't know if a tile saw will do that.

I would love to get some more of that obsidian, the piece I broke up wasn't very big, it polishes so beautifully. Tami

Cher, If you were to follow Pho's suggestion above, I think you might actually get some tumbling rough without having to bust those up.
You ain't kidding. Those are gorgeous. I added obsidian to my list of must haves when I saw James Glass Buttes pix. This just confirms it. Thanks for sharing.

You lost me on that one Matt, all Pho suggested was that I put them on the shelf to look at. That won't get me any tumbling rough. *smile*
