This is one from my first tumble but I don't know what it is. It is from a Lake Michigan beach. Any clues?

No clue on the ID, but it looks like you got a great polish on that!

Looks like quartzite to me. Does it have a very fine grainy texture? Not on the surface -- the surface looks well polished and smooth. But if you can see a fine grainy structure beneath the polish, it is almost certainly quartzite, a fairly common rock all over Michigan, that sometimes takes a good shine.
If it does not have any grainy structure, it could be a mix of quartz and chalcedony. I have found rocks here in Michigan that appear to be macro quartz with some chalcedony mixed in.

Did I hear first tumble? For a first (or any) tumble that is great. Super impressive.

Ah, good call on the quartzite, holajonathon. There is some fine structure underneath. The brown markings threw me off.
Probably beginners luck on the shine. Had others with pits and cracks.
Thanks to both of you for the comments. This Forum has been extremely helpful.

Thanks to both of you for the comments. This Forum has been extremely helpful. Some quartzite polishes up smooth and shiny, while other pieces do not. It seems to depend on how well the tiny grains are "glued" together.

Did I hear first tumble? For a first (or any) tumble that is great. Super impressive. Here to say this, as well. Great work! I only have one piece so far that I really got a good shine on and I think I did a lot of that with buffing, not the tumbler. Haha.
Excellent.
