In looking at various machines for lapidary work, I keep seeing the terms "dop", "dip stick", and "dip wax", without any definitions. What are they?

Dop is a dowel that is used to hold a cab when grinding. It is optional when a person doesn't care about possible abrasions on their fingers.
Dip wax aka dop wax is how a cab is attached to the dop. Special wax that is melted to attach and heated to remove. I use super glue for the attachment.
Dip stick aka dop stick is the same as a dop. Dip stick is also used to check lubricant levels and does a poor job holding cabs.

I had a cabbing lesson from the person I bought my first cabbinq equipment from. He supplied dop wax and an alcohol lamp to heat the stone and melt the wax. I had a lot of bad experiences with the wax not holding when grinding and then I had to dry the stone and re-dop. It destroyed my work rhythm. For many years I ground without a dop just holding the stone with my fingers. When I had a job, only worked on the weekends and I had five days for the abrasions to heal. When I retired I wanted to be able to grind every day so I went back to using a dop. Super glue generally doesn't come off when working and when frozen becomes brittle. Sometimes the glue won't some off and I can remove the stone from the dop using acetone. The adhesion varies based on the type of stone that is attached. The biggest advantage to using wax is when a person wants to polish the back of the cab since it comes off without damaging the finish. I generally only sand the back of my cabs so it isn't an issue. When I have to polish the back, I hold the cab with my fingers and they get chewed up,

In high school—-a while ago—-, “dip stick” was a major put down/insult. At the time, I had no idea what either a dip stick or a dop stick was. I suspect I used dipstick now and then…. : )

My wife has a piece of rhyolite with small inclusions that she would like sanded. I'm thinking a dop stick is the way to go. Looking at a couple dop pots now.

I actually use "loctite" glue and big nails. I'm not sure about the spelling of the glue. I'll Google it and update. It works great for cabbing. EDIT: here is an Amazon screenshot. Much cheaper than a dop pot. flic.kr/p/2mpcU7S

In my high school, we didn’t use s$ t We used fuss (rhymes with puss) face. Had a lot of Syrians who introduced the foreign equivalent, so it would get by the administration.
