jasoninsd So is there a signup sheet for future trips with Thirsty Coyote Adventures? Thanks Henry! I'm going to bet there would be an empty sheet for a very long time! LOL If you ever muster the courage for a third float down the river, I’m hoping you just skip the post and write a book! You have a wonderful ability to tell a good story and it would make a great read. Not that I am hoping for more misadventures for you, but these first two trips have certainly been entertaining (for us more than you). I’m looking forward to seeing that petrified log and the other finds. Thanks Brian! I'm thinking the book would be a good bathroom reader at best! LOL One of my favorite authors of all time is Patrick McManus. He wrote stories for Outdoor Life (if I remember that correctly) and went on to author a series of books containing short stories. His ability to find humor in the most amazing situations is who I've always tried to emulate when writing anything...including some college papers - which worked out quite often! LOL Wow! What an adventure. You do know how to tell a story. I'm glad you made it out ok. After your last two Cheyenne river adventures I understand your wife's hesitation on the Yellowstone river trip haha. I think it's not so much a problem with the plan as much as it is the vehicle. That raft of yours seems to cause you quite a few headaches. I can't wait to see the pictures. Don't forget to do something really really nice for your wife. It seems you may owe it to her after this haha. Thanks Lunk! I was going to say my wife would be less concerned because I'd be going with someone...versus being alone. However, the fact that she knows the Yellowstone is "bigger" than the Cheyenne might just even out her "worry"! LOL Truthfully, the raft is amazing...it really is the water level in that section of the Cheyenne River. I really am pondering one more trip...but I'm going to enter the river after Rapid Creek enters into the river...that way the water level would be a lot higher than in the sections I've gone through so far. Yeah...I really do kind of owe her on this one! All I can say is, Dang, Jason!
That was quite an adventure. Thanks for the story telling. Your wife IS a saint.
Thanks Robin! She reminded me several times today how much of a saint she is! (Not really...she has a LOT of patience...which I'll probably put to the test again before winter hits! LOL) Wow! No wonder you needed a new phone... I was wondering about that. Maybe once you clean up the pet wood, it will be fully precious opal. That about all that would make it worth it... 😂 You're not kidding about opalized wood being worth it...but I'm almost 100% sure it ain't gonna be opalized! LOL That is a brutal day, glad you’re able to laugh about it! I can imagine the surprise you must have had when you talked to your wife and found out you lost your voice! She might have been a little concerned lol! Thanks for sharing the story, reminds me of something I might do. Thanks JV! She's almost to the point of laughing about all this...almost! LOL See!!! I'm not the only one who acts before he thinks! LOL You know the really sad part...my dad offered his waterproof case the night before. The first trip, I kept having to take it out of the case to check for cell service and the phone never came close to getting wet. This time, not so much! LOL - There's a bit of irony in the fact that I had kept it dry for 15 hours while traversing the river...and the only time it got wet was when I was within TWENTY FEET of the finish line! If there's a book coming, it HAS to be titled, "Fear & Loathing on the Cheyenne River." Or perhaps...."Failures of Those Who Are Not Smarter Than A Fifth Grader"! LOL Hmmm. I don't even know what to say. Except that I don't think I'll be going with you on any adventures down the Cheyenne River anytime soon! Excellent story, better luck on the Fairburns next time! Thanks Mike! What?? Where's your sense of adventure! LOL (I don't blame you my friend! We'll keep out get-togethers on dry land!) 1. Glad you are okay. 2. Glad you got out of there with the goods. 3. Time to look for a publisher, I can hear it now: "The Epic Tales of Jason In SD" now available in paperback! 4. If you have any plans on becoming a tour guide you should probably destroy any evidence of your adventure posts. Thanks Al! Now in all fairness, I have taken people out who have come into town and everyone stayed safe and sound...I just knew not to take them out to the river! LOL Granted that trip seemed almost like you were begging for trouble, but props for persevering and getting home. One thing that might be beneficial, get a phone / tablet whatever with a GPS chip in it so you can use map apps offline (and / or have a paper map backup). Being dependent on internet / cell service isn't a reliable option anywhere outside city limits. Thanks Tim! Not begging...but I kind of figured there would be some trouble...but not quite as much as there was that day. The GPS chip isn't a bad idea! Now before anyone thinks I'm TOO much of an idiot. I did actually try to verify cell service the morning I was dropped off. As my dad and I turned onto the road leading back to the entry point (the road was parallel to the river - IN the river valley) my phone was showing one bar. So, I really did think I would have cell service. But, the GPS would solve tons of issues. I could have actually taken my vehicle GPS with me...and might just do that next time. (Great suggestion!) jasoninsd , How far did you travel and what was your schedule to be picked up ? So, I figure it had to be between 10-12 miles...looking back, probably closer to the 12 miles following the path of the river. As far as "scheduled" pickup, I had no idea of when I'd actually get out of there. I was figuring on getting out of there around 6pm...but when you stop on rockbar after rockbar without a timeline to follow at any particular location, it's really difficult to gauge how long it's going to take to travel. Also, when you get stuck on a 30 foot section of sandbar and have to drag the raft along that section, it's hard to tell if it's going to take 10 minutes...or 20 minutes... I was gauging the distance I had traveled the first and second days fomr the first time I went out on the river...and the distance I was planning on this trip seemed to be about the same as either of those days...so I thought a 10-11 hour time frame would account for this trip. It just didn't work out that way at all...

Actually...Black Hills Gold is quite famous...maybe it isn't too far to be checking it! You made me look up the Sedaris book. I found a website that had an excerpt from the book. I love it! Clearly I need to give him a shot. I'd recommend starting with "The Grasshopper Trap". He writes these short stories that are maybe five or six pages long...just short enough to be able to finish one story and put the book down for awhile...and never feel like you lost your place.

Dang man, sounds like quite the adventure! I had thought the flashlight might help you find a rock or a place to pee in the dark not fight off a frickin Badger! Nice work and I know all too well the sound you made as the growling beast got closer to you in the pitch black darkness, I've made that sound myself... maybe not for as good of a reason either:) I see you got a new phone and I don't think I saw a pic of that mythical piece of wood you brought back with some blood and a bit of your soul for payment.lol You should get one of those GPS tag trackers www.rei.com/product/869419/spot-trace?sku=8694190001&store=48&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_8694190001%7C92700057791438938%7CNB%7C71700000074091798&gclid=CjwKCAjw7fuJBhBdEiwA2lLMYVADLkwHVQW-pg7CfRg7Z9BjHliVa_xsXwqmV1OWerZY5lcq_9ULCRoCweMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds the next time you go out. Then Brenda could track you and see exactly where you're at whenever she wants. Then say the next time you're sending a repeated text of "I'm on fire finding these Fairburn's" and Brenda only gets the I'm on fire part, she can drive out and smack you up side the head in person. If you can wait (I know you can't) till next spring I will fly out and join you on one of the harebrained adventures. Sarah said Brenda is a saint as well. Shoot, I already read her the stories of the first and second Cheyanne adventures... maybe she will forget by next year. I am happy to hear you're a trooper and made it through fairly unscathed!!

David is hysterical. I nearly choked on my food the first time I heard his audio diary of the time he had a job as a Christmas elf. Okay...so that just made me push further! LOL Dude, I'll tell ya, you couldn't have started with a better story. His voice just adds to it. His books cover a w I d e variety of topics. There's one story we read aloud every Christmas Eve (I can't make this up). Holidays on Ice and MTP One Day are literary gold. Don't choke . Another writer that has given me as many LOL moments as DS is Jenny Lawson in Let's Pretend this Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir. You can "unread" some of the funny, hilarious hijinx that she unveils in a book that I wish I could read again for the FIRST time. I pick up used copies at the thrift store of both and give them away... except I've never found a used Jenny Lawson. You're laughing at that statement aren't you?

Have you thought about putting out a feeler asking if people would be interested? Was thinking I would. Of course everyone has to start with the my book I'm currently reading b/c it's awesome and 700 pages and I've already started;). LOL. But seriously folks... I'm reading John McPhee's Annals of the Former World (I'm crushing it w/the underlines tonight). It's 700 pages and 5 books in total. I'd be willing to negotiate the first book Basin & Range lol. Alright, fine, I'll do it. I'll ask. It's like the gif of the wizard kid stomping off after making his bed.
