rockjunquie I have a hard time marking preforms on slabs like this because there is too much going on. Apart from avoiding structural problems (unhealed fractures, soft areas, etc), do you have any advice for such a "busy" slab? The slab in the first photo does not have any horribly unstable areas, but the questionable areas are marked in yellow: That leave things pretty wide open. I with the slab had some monotone boring parts to better frame the interesting parts. Here are a few possibilities I came up with, but I don't like any of them. None have good visual flow, although the blue "Y" in the first option helps a little bit in that regard.

When it comes to making decisions on preforming on slabs like that, I feel like Chidi. To paraphrase, I'll mark a cab, and after thinking about it really hard, Ill narrow it down to two possibilities: yes and no. At least I've learned to mark in pencil, until I'm (relatively) sure. It looks like you've come up with some really good possibilities for calibrated cabs. I'd probably go for at least a few free-forms, but that's me. I need to make an effort to work on a few more regular shapes. Nice material.

The best advice I can give is to use a template and move it around until you find a pleasing area. You don't really have to use that shape per se, but it helps you to zero in on an interesting idea. I like the ones you came up with, especially the last two.

Can you add at least 1 photo of this material to the crazy lace thread?

Can you add at least 1 photo of this material to the crazy lace thread? Ok. Don't encourage me or I'll keep bombing that thread with photos.

Great slabs. I really like the round cab you outlined.

Great slabs. I really like the round cab you outlined. Thanks. I'll probably try to cut that one as a preform, even if I have a hard time keeping circles... circular.

Hope my kids like it because I spent their inheritance on it. Just joking. I'm leaving everything to my cats.
