Gotta tread lightly here, but man... I decided to get more 60/90 SiC form The Rock Shed because they had good price per pound. Normally I'd be lazy and just use Amazon, but wanted to support a business that is dear to my heart. Since I was buying the grit, I thought I'd grab a few pounds of rock since I'm already ordering. They were out of stock on pretty much all the rough I was interested in, so I just bought the grit. $9.75 for 3lbs (great price) - The crazy part of it was the shipping. $13.75 for shipping Really, it's my bad for clicking checkout so fast. I guess the moral of the story for newcomers is, don't use the Rock Shed for small purchases. It's simply not worth it. Love the store though.

Their “calculator” for shipping is usually quite high. They will decrease shipping to the cheapest amount possible. Usually a flat rate. But yes -grit is heavy and when I buy it I buy in 50lb

I've usually made large-once-a-year purchases to make the shipping costs more palatable. I agree - a single bag of grit costs almost as much to ship as to purchase. A few years ago, I did what saxplayer did - purchased 50lbs of grit. It was expensive to ship but I've been slowly using it up for years now.

I guess the moral of the story for newcomers is, don't use the Rock Shed for small purchases. It's simply not worth it. Love the store though. Don't tread lightly, just be truthful. Your shipping cost will most likely be closer to what they have shown for 5lbs. of grit on their Amazon store: www.amazon.com/Rock-Shed-Products-Silicon-Carbide/dp/B00YDFGD54/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=Rock+Shed+Products&qid=1632527710&sr=8-5Hopefully it will be less. I do not bother placing an order until I have quite the list of grit, polish, parts, etc. so shipping is almost an insignificant amount of the overall cost, harder to do when you are just starting out. Though even if I could bag up some of my bulk grit and send it to you, shipping a SFRB would still cost $8. After many orders over the last few years there have been a couple of issues but the good has far outweighed the bad and they have remedied any errors on their end in an expedient manor. Their website leaves a bit to be desired, probably best to call them to see what options there are.

That's great about the refund, they usually do. I typically purchase 3-4 5lb bags of grit or ceramic from them and they ship flat rate regional. When I buy I try to think of anything I may need so I can mitigate shipping prices...with any vendor.
I've never found it economical to purchase anything but ceramic on Amazon, but I try to save that for a rock shed order.
I recently purchased an off-size grit (400 and 600) that I couldn't find at TRS, I threw a bunch of items in... the shipping was still only 11 bucks.

I have never paid full price for shipping from them. The same as others, I usually order several items at a time. Mostly grits/polishes, but at times parts, rough rocks and jewelry findings. Shipping is always reduced from the initial amount.
The Rock Shed is one of a few places where you can call and talk with someone if you have questions about anything. Shawn is awesome and also responds promptly to emails.

Update! They did refund a good chunk of the shipping cost. That's pretty sweet. Thanks for the update. If they are guilty of anything it's having a bit of a 'dated' website and as someone else mentioned the shipping calculator is almost never correct. They do make it right though - every time I've ordered from them they correct the charges to reflect the actual accurate shipping cost.

Don't get discouraged if you see a high shipping cost at order time; Shawn is super reasonable and the site estimates the shipping too high 99% of the time. I think of it as a pleasant surprise when my charge is less than expected.
When it comes to lapidary, my method is to bulk purchase a few times a year, and just accept that it costs a lot of money because I'm giving someone a good workout from carrying the box. It's not his fault, it's just the way things are.

Funny comment, Tommy. kinda reminds me of my days when the connection made all this scratchy tonal noises before speeding up to 600 baud ... LOL. Of course, if it's not broken don't fix it. Now that I know where to find things on the site, it's crazy-simple!

They actually have a second website that looks a little more modern, if that is of interest: rockshed.com. (The 'old' one is therockshed.com) Both sites belong to the same people; I asked 😀.

I've had the "TheRockShed" URL book marked for a long time and I had no idea there was a newer site. I wonder why they don't just set a redirect and go with the newer site ...

The first time I saw the newer site I called Shawn to let him know as I thought someone was doing something underhanded. When he told me that was also their site I asked him why he kept the old one, said he was worried people wouldn't find the new one. I'm no tech wizard but I've been "redirected" enough times to know it's a possibility. More often than not I use the old website and forget the new one even exists, much to my dismay as the newer one is better organized.

One time I made an order and picked a classifier. Wrong one showed up, let him know. He sent me the right one at no charge and didn't ask for the first one back. Alright, my good sir. You've got my business going forward. Done. Easy.
