Jonathan - nice group of Mexican Lace! I really like that last one pictured! Me too. I'm very interested to see what's inside. It was sold as "black feather lace." I don't see much lace on the outside, but lots of black feathers.

I bought a bunch of that from a guy in Quartzsite named Hyrum, so we call it Hyrum agate.

Back 45 years ago it was just thrown in with Mexican Crazy Lace and all called Crazy Lace Agate. Don't you love Marketing names.
Thanks for posting the images and info I will segregate it out of my stuff under the new name. It does have a different look than most MCL.

Thanks for posting the images and info I will segregate it out of my stuff under the new name. It does have a different look than most MCL. I agree 100%. There are now 101 names for lace agates coming from the same area of Chihuahua, Mexico. A lot of it is marketing b.s., but when there's enough material with truly distinct patterns or colors, I don't mind new names. The "laguna lace" designation is terrible since it intentionally confuses Mexican crazy lace (one of the most abundant materials in the lapidary market) with laguna agate -- an extremely high grade, expensive, and less abundant material. But sellers have realized that "laguna lace" is a great marketing term, and more and more crazy lace has become "laguna lace." The name sarape jasper, on the other hand, isn't confusing anyone. It certainly does not look like classic Mexican crazy lace. So I like that it has it's own name.

I agree. I saw a guy with a truckload of Sarape Jasper at a show a few years ago. Very intelligent marketing scheme. Take the low grade discards from the crazy lace pile and rename it. Still a hard and interesting material and in these times of good rock shortages, waste not want not. Kudos.

It's no substitute for good crazy lace, but it is an interesting jasper in its own right. It beats the very colorful but heavily fractured crazy lace that I see for sale all over the place.
