Good morning everyone. Does anyone have a favorite device for testing for radiation in their collected rocks? We do have the potential to run up on uranium out here and I'm curious if anyone has a Geiger counter. If so, what brand, how much was it and where did you buy it ( I mean hey, I want to be safe but I still like a good deal).
Thanks!

I don't know if this is helpful, but my BIL picked up a nice one on eBay a while back. Old vintage lantern socks are used to calibrate.

Make sure the one you get actually works...or else...

I have a vintage one somewhere that runs on a 6 volt (?)battery but I’ve never used it. I know the Russian ones that sell for about 150 are supposed to be decent reliable units but I’m guessing those are off limits now.

I borrowed a vintage one from a friend. After investing a few $$ worth of batteries and fiddling with a bunch of material that I was pretty sure should have some reactivity, I convinced myself it was a process that was not worth it for what it was telling me. I have my mother's orange fiesta ware on the shelf so I'm not going to worry about rocks in the shop.

Yes, these are one source of radiation. When I was in high school I was in the Junior Academy of Science and we got invited to the Nuclear Society convention. One of the booths had various sources of radiation we normally would not think of with a Geiger counter to show the levels. Among other examples they had were these Coleman lantern mantels and some ceramic glazed dishes. Some ceramics due have radioactive glazes.

I am of no help in your quest but the topic made me giggle ... I currently have a 400 lb river polished serpentine boulder in the back of my truck and yesterday while dropping off a small load of pressure treated wood at the hazardous waste facility the guy looked in my bed and asked if it was just the wood ... so of course with a straight face I replied yes and the uranium boulder My wife nearly spit a drink of water she was taking and the look on the guy's face was one of sheer terror. I need to stop doing stuff like that.

Fiesta ware, or Uranium Glass, which also just happened to show up with my UV Flashlight the other day edit: - I *think* it's Manganese in the old bottles, Uranium glass tends to have a green cast under normal light as well. These also show no radioactivity. I'd be happy to be corrected.

If you’re from prineville, I’m assuming you remember the nature conservation protests a few years back? They wanted to close the ochocos down for “conservation”. It was never about that. Turns out it was about the uranium.
