I saw a Youtube where a guy was using an inline light dimmer to regulate the speed of his saw. Is this a viable solution for a cheap one trick saw?

NO! Just no. A light dimmer is completely unsuitable as a motor controller, and most AC motors really don't work well with any kind of speed controller anyway. as the speed goes down torque goes WAY down. But wait, coffee is kicking in. I guess I need to know more about the saw and motor type, smaller saws can have AC/DC motors that can be speed controlled with a dial or even a pedal like a flex shaft or sewing machine. Even with those I would get a router inline controller or a pedal rated for about double the rating of the saw motor. I put a servo for sewing machines in a faceting machine recently, sold as 3/4hp and seems promising so far. A "tutorial" like post is in the works, perhaps 2024 Tommy .

I have a router inline controller that I use on a router and it reduces the speed but it also reduces the power and runs hotter. With a saw I would just adjust the belts and pulley setup. Motor speed control on an AC motor is far more complex than I understand and I think it is safe only for short periods of time. I would never walk away from it. If you want to adjust the rpms get a treadmill DC motor and control guts. People trash or give them away all the time. they are able to run a small trim saw.

Go to a home improvement store. In the area with ceiling fans Look for a Fan Speed Control.
-- Do Not -- use a Lighting Dimmer on an AC Motor

LOL My wife, the certified electrician would yell, "NO!". In fact, that's exactly what she did more than 20 years ago when she saw the really cool speed control box that I made for my cheap one-speed Dremel knock-off. I had put a light dimmer in a small plastic & aluminum electronics project box from Radio Shack, to which I had added an outlet and a thread-prong plug. It worked really well, but she had a cow when she saw it. That said, I continued to use it until I bought a better rotary tool and had no need for it anymore. Since I am a tool packrat, I suspect that I still have it somewhere in our basement.
