I recently purchased a very small slab of Oolite that caught my eye, and I cut this cab from the larger end with the better pattern. The remaining shape of the slab might have yielded one decent cab, but in order to maximize the material used I decided to cut a pair of earring cabs. This pendant stone is 33 x 30 x 6 mm: The earring cabs are 30 x 16.5 mm and also 6 mm high, which really qualifies as "high dome". My wife looked at them and said they look heavy. Oolite is not particularly heavy, but each of these weigh just over 4 grams. That's the same as a nickel (5 cent piece) according to Mr. Google. After searching the forum I am convinced that they're just fine and probably mid-range in terms of weight. But any advice is appreciated, especially regarding max acceptable weight.

I probably wouldn’t wear them. Re weight : some women prefer big earrings; some prefer small studs. Could put the three into a necklace, or maybe a cuff bracelet. Good luck.

Nice pair, but I’d find another way to tell her.

Those would make very attractive earrings.
Full disclosure: I have never worn an earring so my opinion is based solely on sales. I have searched for the same magic threshold number but it really doesn't exist. Some women will wear earrings up to 10 grams each. However most will find 4 grams of stone plus the additional weight of the setting uncomfortable and beyond their limit. By making earrings out of stone I have found that you are almost automatically targeting the minority unless you are making studs. That said, I would definitely set those stones, someone will love them!

Beautiful cabs! When it comes to weight, I always shoot for the lightest with thin cabs. I always state the weight of the completed earring along with an equivalent example (such as the nickel). Heavier ones have been slower to sell, but they do eventually. There are some women who don't mind heavy earrings. I can't say what the heaviest might be.

I have had many people order and purchase heavier earrings. I personally, do not like them. But, the customer is always right, right?

Gary these stones are amazing! I love the oolite and shield shapes. Who is the person standing in the large orb in the upper left? A friend of yours?
Regarding earrings - I can't wear heavy earrings. I will say though, if you're going to set those (and I absolutely think you should), I would do them with a post and omega back somehow. The omega back helps distribute the weight and makes them more comfortable. Also they are more secure. I personally would suffer a little to wear those.

The largest Cabs I ever sold for earrings were 40x30 and they were probably 6mm thick. Only one person in 45 years though. Figure that is a limitation on ears.

Thank you all for your recommendations and advice! I've decided to take the earring pairs' domes down to a height that is more proportional to the pendant cab's height versus size.

These are beautiful
Weight is a personal preference as stated. I know there are many women that would wear these but will the setting add extra weight and how much?

It is an interesting oolite. Not the normal WY oolite or the oolitic chert from MO, TN, other states with a lot of chert. Also nice cabs as well.

Those are awesome cabs! I haven’t cut cabs specifically for earrings, but making them thinner seams like a good idea. I also think that the pattern in that particular stone would still look nice if made into a much smaller cab. Is that particular oolite limestone?
Thanks. I believe that it contains limestone, but an acid test with vinegar and citric acid didn't generate any visible CO2 bubbles. I did see some extremely light degradation of the polish after about 2 minutes. Hardness is about right.

Gary, those look fantastic! I like the idea of the pendant/earring set! I imagine after thinning them out, they'll still look just as gorgeous!

I have nothing substantive to add. But the first time I read the title to this thread, I saw "Eating Cabs: Max Weight"
I thought -- you might want to ask your dentist if that's a good idea.
