Isn't it funny being the "resident rockhound?" Do you find people from work, church, school, family members etc brining you all their rocks and saying "what is this, Will this polish, will you polish this for me? " etc...... LOL My buddy from work has been talking about his geodes for a couple of years and the other day he brought me this 5-gallon bucket overflowing with geodes. Well, I finally started up a batch of rocks the other day and threw in some geode pieces for the heck of it. I think the pieces with the thick banding will polish up very nicely. They are incredibly hard and we're a pain to crush. While they are not too colorful, I believe the tumbling process will really bring out some nice colors. Has anybody else tried to polish geode pieces? ? Well anyway here are some picts: Thanks for looking, Later, Gaeter

That last one could be a piece of the Grand Canyon in miniature. Bet that comes out nice.

Hey nice stuff there Gaeter, that banding is totally cool. I've never tried tumbling geodes but aren't they quite similar in hardness to agates, about a 7? Hope they take a good polish for you.

Busted up geodes will tumble very well, particularly if you don't have a lot of that druzy crap in the middle. Thunder eggs are really just geodes that filled in right to the centre. Same for Brazilian agates. You are essentially tumbling pieces of banded agate.
I think you have some great stuff there that will make for an incredible tumble. If it were me, I would put everything through a week of coarse grind, then take a close and critical look at what you think will turn out well in the end, and what will be baggage. Dump the baggage, keep the good stuff, and go forward from there. The end result should be spectacular.

It's a lot like our local lace agate, which occurs in geode like formations or sometimes intact geodes. The vugs will drive you nuts but other than that, yes, it really makes interesting polished rocks.

Gaetz, I bumped into a lady at the Rockpick and we were talking Geodes. She told me that she tumbles her broken bits and pieces and that they turn out really neat. Lots of swirls and patterns. Keep us posted on your progress. I've got a bucketful of broken Geodes that I'll have to start tumbling if yours turns out good. Steve

I figured that druzy crap will just slough off leaving the good, hard agate to tumble. I really thinks it's gonna work out great. I'll keep you posted.
Rockds- He basically gave them to me and hinted that I give him a bunch of polished stones in return. I think that is a fair trade.

Gaetz, If they do turn out good...you know where there's a Huge Heaping Pile just laying there waiting to be picked up! There's more Geodes and pieces than you could ever need! Steve
