I know a person, who can knap while you watch. Understand, while he made it look like the stone just fell into shape, he told me it took him a looooong time of constant practice. I must say, I have never sold one of his points for under 100$. One of his points I got 920$. He can actually recreate a Clovis to the fine seration.

You have done an awful lot more than I ever did. I just do not have that touch. Keep at it. One day, you will be able to knap one and it will look right out of the identification book.

Pretty darn good if you ask me, congrats on making it and you should be proud. You can only get better now that you've done it.

Looks like an authentic point that one might find in the feild. Good job! I've been waiting to get a tutorial up but I don't have a "camera man." It's kinda hard to knap and take a picture at the same time.

kim, the rock in flint, flint ridge in ohio.
thank you for the encouragement.
Hey james, i started with a smaller piece thinking it would be easier but in the end it was very hard. the instruction i got were not very detailed so most was trial and error for me. I maybe send you lots of question in the future so don't be afraid of telling me to shut up when you've had enough.

Robert, It looks oretty good. I just started trying this out myself. I have got me a few copper tools which have helped out immensely. I have done fairly good at getting the stone to flake across the whole face, but I can't for the life of me, get the dang point not to break from applying to much pressure! I have two that I started yesterday, that are actually turning out half decent. I'll try to get a couple of pics posted. I'm falling way behind on pics and projects. Keep at it...it gets easier the more you practice. Get used to cuts and shards embedding in your hands and fingers! thanks for sharing and I'm glad I'm not the only one here that thinks it's pretty dang difficult! Steve

steve, i wish i could give you some advice on how to avoid the breaks but i'm still trying to figure it out myself. the tip on mine is the thickest part of the whole point. If you look at it sideways, it reminds me of the B2 stealth bomber - sharp angles at the tip then tapering off to the notch. I do the notch last, it seems to be the most difficult for me.
you've got to post some pics, me needs them.

If you're snapping these flakes, it means that you're applying too much pressure. Don't' angle down so steep. You only want to catch the edge. You need to bevel one side, then reverse the piece and flake the other side. Make sure you abrade before removing flakes. Thin areas need to be worked back into thicker material. You can't take a flake off a sharp edge.

Fish, Thanks for the link. That's one I hadn't seen before. I guess I need to get me a pair of big leather gloves....it'd seem to me to be too cumbersome (sp). Robert, I'll try posting some pics, and James....are you ready for 2 Knapping Apprentices to field questions from?!? Steve

James....are you ready for 2 Knapping Apprentices to field questions from?!? Steve Absolutely! I'm glad that more people here are taking an interest in knapping. Hell, before long, Mark will have to add a separate forum so this one doesn't get all bogged down by pictures of arrowheads.
