This may be a VERY dumb question, but are agate and jasper the same? I have a load of "jasper" in the tumbler now and as they go thru the course stage, some of the red jasper are developing clear glassy spots that look suspiciously like the agate i just ordered from The Rock Shed.
PLEASE don't go wild explaining the science between the two - an elementary school level explanation would be great! I appreciate the knowledge on this board but I'm not a scientist. A 4 page explanation on the difference between silicon dioxide and silicon monoxide when examined under a neutron microscope on the second Tuesday of the month is just going to sound like "jgfnk.t43jtp043nkj,rgfhiugfrekjr3wejepo'2bjrefghgiul" to me.

You want simple! For some people, agates are translucent; and jaspers are colorful and opaque. But if you want to know more thequartzpage.de www.quartzpage.de/ will tell it all at all levels of terminology.

Here is a non-technical, but more detailed, explanation with some visual examples:

I've got some Picture Jasper in the tumbler as we speak. I call my Agates 3D, and Jasper, one dimensional. 😁

Thank you, this has been VERY helpful! I like a little woo woo bs in my life, but it's wild out there on the web! I'm finding resources on stones usually fall into 2 categories - very scientific or so new age it hurts!
