Here are some of the latest and greatest disasters in Flint Knapping. It is a rainy mess out today, so I thought I'd just get caught up and take some pics of a few things in the house. The small point was a broken bigger piece that I decided to at least attempt to make something out of it. I finished it about a week ago, and took some pics of it then. The other one I just finished and the other two are ones currently under-way. I have cut some obsidian with my saw, and it has helped me to have them roughly shaped. I am excited to finish the translucent one....hopefully I'll keep patient enough to get it right. James....is the see-through Silver Sheen? I also took a few pics of the knife point I found in Utah. I would guess it's fairly old with the lichen on it. When I found it, I was hunting deer, and I was about to pass it up....the more I looked at it, the more I thought it might actually be a real point. Real or not??? what do you all think? Steve

Wow Steve, nice find. I mean I'm certainly no expert but it sure looks like it was made in the fashioni of arrowheads and knives. The lichen on shows that it's been there for awhile. It's very beautiful too, nice colors in it. Keep practicing on your points, soon you won't have to cut them to make one.

Jeez! I guess I should have read the whole message before looking at the pretty pictures! I am such a dummy! Lichens on top the agate not pattern in the agate *LOL*. Thought the light colored artifact was another piece you had flaked. It actually does look a lot like some knives I have from Modoc County, Calif. Looks like you made you a nice find there. Just make sure and say you picked it up on private land. Can't pick them up on public land these days. Violation of the Federal Antiquities Act with biggie fines if you're caught plus confiscation of your collection!

I know about the laws and such. What really pisses me off, is that any archaeologist you talk to, will have his/her own private collection. I'm not actually out hunting arrowheads for a living, but if I stumble on one, I will definitley pick it up. The laws need to be change, and I guess this could start a whole new thread on a different forum. On a note on the same lines....this Fort in Oregon, that was accidentally burnt down a few weeks ago. Well, now the archaeolgists now have the right to dig and find relics/artifacts. This probably was not an accidental fire...it wouldn't suprise me if it was set on purpose, to now give them the right to dig. I could really go on and on with my own views and feelings...but I won't. Yeah...I found this on Private Ground in Utah! This is only 1 of 5 that I actually have in my collection...and yes..I enjoy them. Sabre...I'm not going off on you, but I just had to vent. Steve

Hey steve those look great, good job. On the laws, some suck and some do some good. when i lived in IN i saw both. the bad was a friend of mine's dad was building a house and came across an indian burial grown - the government could come in and stop everything until they get all the artifacts out - this didn't happen b/c he did tell anyone. another one of my friends lived on a farm that was known to have indian burials. one day this guy wakes up and someone had dug a hole in one of his fields - it looked like a bomb went off

Hi Steve, The silver sheen looks like it has fine sliver glitter in it. The clear stuff is just plain black or gem obsidian. I like it the best because it knaps better than the fancy stuff. good job with the knapping. That artifact is really cool. Never seen anything like it. Kinda ironic isn't it? You can't pick up a artifact on public land because the FEDs tell you so. But they were the ones who killed all the Indians.. Hummmmm......
